MASON CONTINUES TO SHINE IN DENMARK

Carl Mason continued to tap into an extraordinarily rich vein of form when he moved into the lead after the first round of the Scandinavian Senior Open today.
The 54 year old Englishman is currently top of the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit after a fine season which has already yielded four wins – three of those coming in the last four weeks in the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open, the European Senior Masters and the PGA Seniors Championship.
And he gave himself the perfect opportunity for win number five of 2007 with an opening three under par 68 at the rain-soaked Royal Copenhagen Golf Club in Denmark to take a one shot lead over American Doug Johnson, Spain’s Juan Quiros, fellow Englishman Tim Rastall and Bertus Smit of South Africa.
“I am fortunate that my game is right in the groove just now,” said Mason, who topped the Seniors Tour Order of Merit in both 2003 and 2004 before yielding that position to Scotland’s Sam Torrance in the past two seasons.
“I am playing with a lot of confidence and every time I go out on the course I believe I will shoot under par. Therefore, if I get a chance, more often than not because of the way I am feeling, I take it.
“Momentum is a wonderful feeling to have in golf and I certainly have that at the moment – it is just a pity I didn’t have such a feeling about my game 15 years ago when I was a regular on The European Tour.
“But it is better late than never and I’m loving my golf at the moment – really enjoying the game. The European Seniors Tour is a great place to play, we have a lot of great tournaments, and I am lucky that I can be a part of that and have some success.”
