European Challenge Tour

PETER WHITEFORD (67) LYING SECOND
AT KAZAKHSTAN OPEN

From MICHAEL GIBBONS
European Challenge Tour Press Officer

Fifer Peter Whiteford fired a five under par 67 to move into second place at the European Challenge Tour’s richest tournament of the year, the €330,000 Kazakhstan Open.
With the winner at the Nurtau Golf Club taking home €52,800, the Kazakhstan Open is the Challenge Tour’s major tournament of the year, the event that, given the choice, every player wants to win before any other full Challenge Tour event.
Whiteford, currently 83rd on the Rankings, can propel himself into the top 10 with victory in Kazakhstan and put himself in a fantastic position to win a place on The European Tour by finishing inside the end of season top 20.
Seven birdies and two dropped shots represented a great start for the Kirkcaldy professional, who trails leader Leif Westerberg of Sweden by three strokes going into the second round.
“I’m delighted with that,” said Whiteford. “This is a big big week for us with the amount of prize money on offer and I need a fair bit of money to try and get my card, so it was important to get off to a good start and I managed to do that today.”
Of the seven other Scots in the field, Eric Ramsay fared best with a two under par 70. Euan Little and Jamie McLeary finished the day on one under, with Scott Henderson one over. George Murray joined Richie Ramsay on two over, with the injured Andrew McArthur alongside Raymond Russell on four over.
