Howie wins Scottish Junior Tour event after late slip by Bruce

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
A double bogey 6 at the 17th in his final round cost Banff's Callum Bruce (Duff House Royal) what would have been a great come-from-behind victory in the first Scottish Junior Tour 54-hole event of the year, at Forrester Park Resort, near Dunfermline.
Bruce trailed pacemaker Darren Howie (Peebles) by four shots after the latter's brilliant second-round 67 for 138 but the Highlander made up the leeway with a birdie at the third, an eagle 3 at the par-5 16th which overcame a bogey at the short 14th.
But Bruce crashed at the penultimate hole and could not get the last-hole birdie that would have drawn him level again with Howie.
Bruce finished with rounds of 73, 69 and 71 for three-under 213, one shot more than Howie who scored 71, 67 and 74 for 212 and victory.
Howie himself had gone off the rails after birdieing the fourth, fifth and 10th. He bogeyed the first, seventh, eighth, ninth and 16th in his closing 74.
David Rudd (Longniddry), joint leader with Aboyne's Calvin Duffton on 69 after the first round, finished third on 216 (69-76-71)
Jillian Farrell (Cardross) won the girls' title by seven shots with scores of 75, 69 and 75 for a total of 219, three under par for the girls' par 74 course.
Kirsten Brown (Strathaven) was runner-up with ronds of 76, 76 and 74 for 226, 10 shots ahead of joint third placed Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) and Kirsty Brodie (Strathmore).
