A brilliant bogey-free second round of five-under-par 67 has made Darren Howie (Peebles) a hot favourite to win the first Scottish Under-18 Junior Tour event of the season at Forrester Park Resort near Dunfermline.
With only 18 holes on Sunday to go, Howie's six-under-par tally of 138 has him four strokes clear of Callum Bruce (Duff House Royal (73-69 for 142) with another northerner, Marc Watt (Inverallochy) in third place on 143 after rounds of 72 and 71.
Calvin Dufftown (Aboyne) and David Rudd (Longniddry), co first-round leaders on the 69 mark, slipped back with afternoon rounds of 75 and 76 respectively.
Howie, younger brother of Craig Howie, had halves of 33 and 34 in his second round, highlighted by birdies at the first, third, sixth, 14th and 16th.
Bryce had five birdies in his second-round 69 and would have less catch-up work to do on Sunday had he not bogeyed the 11th and 13th.
Two-round tallies of 156 and better qualified for Sunday's final round in the boys' section.
In the girls' category, led by Jillian Farrell (Cardross) with a superb second-round 69 for a two-round total of 144 and an eight-stroke lead, scores of 162 and better qualified; 164 and worse missed the cut.
