McKinnon leads Scots in weather-
delayed Glenmuir PGA event
FROM RON MARSHALL
Despite a galling three-putt from 30ft on the final green, Jim McKinnon (Irvine) carried the Scottish flag boldly in the weather-delayed Glenmuir PGA professional championship at Moortown Golf Club, Leeds today.
The Scot, claiming his opening round of two-under 69 was his best of the season, was full of admiration for a course he rates in the top three he’s played.
“I hit 16 greens in regulation on a course that demands a pinpoint-accurate tee shot on every hole. There’s not a weak part in Moortown’s armoury, and despite those three putts (I’d left two others short towards the end of the round), I’m very happy with the day’s work.”
The lead is held, one shot ahead of McKinnon, by former European Tour winner, Andrew Sherborne, and Will Barnes from the Lichfield. After a delay of 2hr 40min because of torrential rain early in the day, 40 players in the field of 156 were unable to complete their round when darkness fell.
Alastair Webster, a former winner of this event, had a dreadful start - triple bogey 7 at the second and a double bogey 6 at the third. He did birdie the seventh and 12th in halves of 42 and 36 for a seven-over 78.
