Home Rule by Tain in North District

Famous Grouse team competition

By ROBIN WILSON
Having twice been runners-up in the North District's Famous Grouse team competition, 1985 and last year at Inverness where they lost out on a count back, Tain Golf Club finally came good over their home course with a seven-shot win from Nairn Dunbar.
With home advantage the team of three local players, brothers James and Ross MacLeod, and Alan Everett, had their best two scores from each round taken to post the winning total of 284. Nairn Dunbar trio Lee MacDonald, William Barron and Kenny Donnelly totalled 291.
In third place on 293 came Elgin's Andrew Rollo, Kevin Taylor and Steven Milne.
James Macleod, just recently returned from a spell working in America was the trump player in the Tain team. With eight birdies over his 36 holes he was one under par in both rounds and his two 69s were the foundation of the Tain win.
His brother James's 76 counted in the team's first round total of 145, which was two behind Elgin's 143 ( Andrew Rollo 71 and Kevin Taylor 72), but to James Macleod's second 69 was added a second round 70 from Everett for 139 and Elgin slipped back to third place with a second round total of 150, Taylor repeating his 72 but Milne and Rollo both scoring 78.
After play in the first round was delayed 90min due to an early morning sea mist blanketing the course, Nairn Dunbar's Lee MacDonald returned a first round 74 and then a second round 69 to pull his club up into second place.
Kenny Donnelly's first round 73 put Nairn Dunbar in the frame with 147 but the best they could produce to add to MacDonald's second round 69 was one of the 75's scred by Barron and Donnelly for 144. Their final total 291 for runners up place.
The winning Tain team now go forward to represent the North in the Scottish finals at Windyhill Golf Club, Glasgow on September 28. The winners at Windyhill progress to the European club team finals in Turkey later in the year.
