PERTH MAN BRIAN SHARES THE FIRST-ROUND
LEAD IN EUROPEAN SENIORS TEAM EVENT

Perth player Brian Grieve (King James VI) shared the day's low-scoring honours with England's Andrew Morrison in the first qualifying round of the European senior men's amateur team golf championship at Bled Golf Club, Slovenia today.
Grieve and Morrison topped the field of 108 with two-under-par 71s. Brian had an excellent outward half of 33, the best of the day, but came back in 38.
Gordon MacDonald (Callander was in a big group in joint fourth place on 74. Gordon had halves of 37.
Stephen Ellis (Cowal) shared 11th place with a first round 75 (39-36) while Royal Aberdeen's John Johnston and Ian Hutcheon (Monifieth) both had 76s to be in the joint 19th bracket.
John had birdfies at the first, second, ninth and 12th but tired over the last few holes and bogeyed the 15th, 16th and 18th for 40 home.
It was much the same story for Hutcheon who had said at Nairn last week that he felt tired BEFORE he went to Slovenia. Ian birdied the second and eighth but had a double bogey at the 11th and further shots dropped at the 14th and 18th in 41 for the second nine.
Donald McCart (Castlerock) was the Scot who least enjoyed his day's golf. He finished joint 96th with an 87 (45-42) which included triple bogey 7s at the fourth and the 15th.
Scotland are the defending champions but with no first-round team totals being issued by the organisers, it was difficult to calculate the Scots' position. On the face of it, with Grieve and MacDonald in the top four, one would have to assume that the Scots are sitting pretty, close to England.
