British boys' amateur championship

FERRIER AND McLAREN MAKE PROGRESS
AT ROYAL PORTHCAWL

FROM THE R&A WEBSITE

A classic match-play battle between England team-mates Eddie Pepperell and Oscar Sharpe for a place in the third round of the Boys Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl finished after four extra holes with a victory for Pepperell.
Only last week they were playing side by side in England's team colours in the Boys Home Internationals. Today they were spirited opponents as the match went to the 18th and beyond.
Pepperell looked to be coasting to a comfortable victory when he was four up after seven holes, but he lost the eighth when Sharpe holed from 15 feet and he missed from three. His putting let him down again when he three-putted to lose the 10th and his lead slipped to one when he was out of bounds at the 12th.
Sharpe squared the match at the short 14th when Pepperell failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker and they halved the next six.
At the 212-yard fourth, their 22nd, Pepperell finally managed to break the deadlock with a three-iron to six feet for a winning birdie.
Their England boys team captain, Jack Hiluta, has also made it through to the next round with a two hole win over Richard Fitzgerald of Bromborough.
First player into the third round was Frenchman Daniel Perrier, the conqueror of defending champion Matthew Nixon in the opening round. Perrier had a runaway 6 and 5 victory over Ashley Chesters of Hawkstone Park.
The plus-four player from Brittany was two under par for the 13 holes played and looked in total command throughout the match.
Also through to the third round is Jamie Howie of Royal St Davids who reached the quarter-finals of the Welsh Amateur this year and has now been named for his country's men's team. He won the opening hole with a birdie and added three more on his way to a 4 and 2 win over Christopher Lampert of Germany.
There was a surprising defeat for Irish boys champion Stephen Healey by Henry Smart of Walton Heath who went two ahead with birdies at the 467yd 12th and the short 14th. When Healey missed from very short range at the 16th his championship was over.
Scott Fraser from Royal Aberdeen, who won all three singles for Scotland in the Boys Home Internationals last week, was two up on Belgium's Jean Relecom after birdies at the 10th and 11th and hit what he described as the best four-iron of his life to eight feet at the dangerous 18th to clinch a two hole victory.
