JAMES WHITE LEADS AFTER THREE ROUNDS AT LEVEN

Stirling University student James White, the 2006 Scottish boys' match-play champion from Lundin Golf Club, took up the running after three rounds of the Standard Life Leven Gold Medal today.

James, whose father won the tournament in 2003, had a third-round 66 for a 15-under-par tally of 198 in what has been one of the lowest-scoring events in the oldest amateur-stroke play golf tournament in the world.

White leads from host club member Brian Souter by one shot with former British boys champion Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) gaining ground with a 65 to take up third place on 201.

Overnight leader Steven McEwan (Caprington), who set a new course record of nine-under-par 62 in the first round, has subsequently had rounds of 69 and 71 for fourth place on 202.

White overhauled playing partner McEwan with birdies at the third, fourth and fifth on his way to an outward three-under-par 31 in the third round.

James dropped his only shot of the round at the 11th but finished strongly with birdies at the 14th and 16th for 35 home and a 66.

Brian Soutar also had a 66.

Former British boys champion Jordan Findlay has come into the reckoning, thanks to back-to-back 65s - 12 under par for 36 holes.

Following Steven Rennie (Airdrie) having a hole in one at the seventh (182yd) in Saturday's second round, Ryan McKenzie (Easter Moffat) notched the second aced of the weekend with an eight-iron at the 163yd fifth hole in his final round.
