FIFER LATIMER WINS DORNOCH'S CARNEGIE SHIELD

By ROBIN WILSON
After eliminating a former double winner in the semi final, 19 year old US colege student Peter Latimer from Markinch in Fife beat the holder, Jimmy Gunn (Royal Dornoch), in the final to win the Carnegie Shield for the first time at Royal Dornoch on Saturday.
Latimer, who returns for his second year at Guilford College, North Carolina next weekend, was almost out of the tournament after 12 holes in the semi final against a former Guilford student, Californian Andrew . Biggadike.
Three down to the American Latimer found four birdies over the remaining six holes, the 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th to take him through to meet Gunn.
He and Gunn were eveningly matched in the final with Latimer gaining an edge over the holder due to his less than normal dependable putter. Gunn went two behind after a three putt on the third green. He  had lost the second hole when he pulled left from the tee,and was still two behind on the turn for home.
At the short tenth Gunn found his second birdie of the tie and following this up up with two fine shots onto the par five 12th green the local favourite, who is hoping soon to turn professional, got back to level but he was never able to get his nose in front.
Another three putt putt on the 14th and three from the edge of the green at the next hole against Latimer's birdie loosened the Gunn 's grip on the Shield and following halves on the next two holes Latimer took ownership of the majestic trophy on the 17th green.
Royal Dornoch's Elgin based member Philip Gauld beat Frenchman Stephanne Ygora 3&2 to win the Class 1 handicap Davidson Shield and Tom Lynch (Craigielaw) won the Class 2 handicap E. C. Fraser Trophy beating Bruce Gall (The Wisley) in the final.
