HUGH HUNTER'S CLACKMANNANSHIRE NEWS

DISAPPOINTING WEEK

There were disappointments for both Callum Macaulay and Bob Stewart last week in their latest tournaments. Tulliallan’s Bob Stewart made the journey to Nairn for the British Seniors Amateur, but with rounds of 84 and 80, he missed the cut for the last day of the event. The title was won by former Walker Cup player Arthur Pierse (Tipperary) on a play off with scores of 67,71,73.
There was some consolation for Bob in that he has moved up the Scottish Seniors Order of Merit from 19th place to 16th place, and will be looking forward to the Order of Merit Finals at Blairgowrie.
At the other end of the country, Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) was one of the six Amateur invites in a field of 156 at the Scottish Challenge event at Cardrona near Peebles. Callum started brilliantly in the first round with birdies at the first three holes, but saw shots slip away later and finished with a 75.
In the second round, he started at the eighth hole, and after a number of pars, the next three bogeys could have been a complete setback - especially as his group took around three hours to play 10 holes.
However, showing his true class, Callum rallied with five birdies in the next eight holes to give a respectable pne under par 71, and a two round total of two over par. With the qualifying cut set at three under par, Callum just missed out on the last two rounds.
Again there was a bit of consolation in the Scottish Amateur Golf Rankings, in that Callum is now in second spot to Lloyd Saltman. Lloyd will be turning professionals just after the Home Internationals in September, so Callum has a good chance of taking over the No 1 position.

BELHAVEN BEST SCOTTISH CLUB HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP

There was better news for other Clackmannan County golfers elsewhere. At the Regional Final held at Forrester Park in Fife, two local clubs competed (Braehead and Dollar) with Braehead (Jim Anderson, Stevie Duncan) finishing in 14th place and securing a place in the final which is also being played at Cardrona in September. The Dollar team finished further down the field.
Another regional final to be played at Cawder will see Tulliallan (James Robb, Stewart Kennedy) trying to become the second Wee County club in the final.

BELHAVEN BEST CAPTAINS AND SECRETARIES CHAMPIONSHIP

The club administrators get their chance in this event, and Wee County clubs Dollar (S Morrison, J Cant) and Alloa (C White, T White) will be trying their luck in a regional final at Duddingston on August 21, and hoping to reach the Grand Final at Blairgowrie on September 11.

COUNTY SENIOR LEAGUE
Reports will appear soon on the progress of the local Golf Clubs in the league which is played on Monday evenings.
