STEVEN MCEWAN BREAKS LEVEN LINKS
RECORD WITH A NINE-UNDER-PAR 62
Steven McEwan shaved a stroke of the Leven Links course record with a splendid opening round of nine-under-par 62 in the 72-hole Standard Life Leven Gold Medal today
McEwan, 19-year-old member at Caprington Golf Club, near Kilmarnock, lowered the mark of 63 set earlier this season by Leven Golfing Society member Euan Bullions.
McEwan, winner of the Scottish boys' stroke-play championship at Monifieth in 2005, had a great run of five successive 3s from the fifth to the ninth. The sixth was an eagle 3 and the eight a birdie 3 in an outward half of four-under-par 30. He held his score together well in showery weather to come in 32 for 62.
That gave him a three-stroke lead over James White (Lundin), a Stirling University student and last year's Scottish boys' match-play champion at West Kilbride.
James' father, a reinstated Tartan Tour pro, won the Leven Gold Medal in 2002.
