R&A Press Release

ALWOODLEY HOSTS BRITISH MID-AMATEUR
CHAMPIONSHIP

The centenary celebrations continue for Alwoodley Golf Club, Leeds when it hosts the British Mid-Amateur Championship from August 15-19, the first time the championship has been staged on this famed inland course.

The British Mid-Amateur has a record of producing repeat winners but in 2006, when Daniel Perrett was aiming to become the first player to win three successive titles, Simon Young of Workington emerged victorious at the 19th hole to have his name engraved on the trophy. Now Young, 28, will be hoping to follow Gary Wolstenholme, John Kemp and Perrett as players who have successfully defended the title since the tournament started in 1995.

Surprisingly, the trophy has never made the trip overseas and this year, with 13 players from the U.S. in the field of 144, perhaps the time has come. Former professional Paul Simson, 56, already has one R&A Championship under his belt – the 2006 Seniors – and will now be tackling the over-25’s in an attempt to put his name on R&A silverware for a second time. Other players who will be making the transatlantic crossing include Jay Blumenfeld, Trey Owen and DeWitt Weaver, while from France, Francois Illouz will be making a further attempt at capturing the Mid-Amateur crown.

Since a modest beginning in 1907 Alwoodley has become one of the country’s best loved inland courses. This impressive piece of golfing terrain has comfortably stood the test of time and will now list yet another championship in its impressive CV.

Its charms have been recognised on numerous occasions since the course staged its first major national event, the English Ladies’ Close Amateur Championship in 1967 and most recently, the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship was played there in June.

Each of the 144 competitors plays two rounds of stroke play and the top 64 compete in the match play stage that starts on Friday 17 August. The 18-hole final is played on the Sunday afternoon.
