NIALL LAMOND'S SECOND ROUND 72 WINS HIM SENIOR GOLD MEDAL AT WINDY TAIN

BRONZE MEDAL WON BY NEW MEMBER ALASTAIR STODDART (ROYAL DORNOCH)

Three players - Niall Lamond (Tantallon) 75 72, George G Paterson (Fortrose and Rosemarkie) 72 75, and Robert Smith (Nairn) 71 76 - jointly headed the field on seven-over-par 147 (one stroke higher than last year's winning total) on another windy day at Tain for the conclusion of the North of Scotland Senior Men's Open.


Niall won the gold medal by virtue of his better second-round 72. Niall had bogeys at the second, fifth and seventh, as well as a double bogey 6 at the ninth, but birdies at the sixth, 16th and 18th helped him to a best of the day round of two-over 72 (38-34).

George bogeyed the second, third, 10th, 11th, 14th and 16th before birdieing the 18th for a share of the pole position with halves of 37-38

Robert birdied the 12th, but a double bogey at the fifth and bogeys at the eighth, 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th gave him two halves of 38 and denied him outright victory.

Four players shared fourth place on 149 - David Pearson (Royal Dornoch), John Fraser (Royal Burgess), Richard Johnston (Glenbervie) and Maurice Lindsay (Broughty) (72,77).

Overnight leader Ronnie Clark (Erskine) slipped to 8th place after returning an uncharacteristic. birdie-less 81 (39-42) to add to his opening round of 70.

The bronze medal for leading handicap score was won by Alastair Stoddart (Royal Dornoch), playing off seven, with net rounds of 74 and 69 for a total of 143.
 

So how tough were the conditions for this year's tournament? The number of players who retired during it or had No Returns totalled 15.
 




 

 American Olsen leads Senior Qualifyng School in Portugal

America’s Dan Olsen leads the Staysure Tour Qualifying School Final Stage on seven under par after posting a five under par 66 on Day Three as 27 players booked their place in the final round by making the five over par cut.
Only those finishing within eight shots of fifth place at Vale da Pinta made the third -round cut and will be given the chance to compete for one of five 2019 Staysure Tour cards in the fourth round.
Olsen leads the way on seven under par, with Spaniard José Manuel Carriles and Canada’s David Morland three shots back on four under par, while the trio of Sion E Bebb, Tim Thelen and Peter T Wilson share fourth place on three under par.
Three birdies going out and a further three coming in, with a single bogey, was enough for the American to open a three-shot advantage with 18 holes remaining.
The 52 year old progressed through First Stage at Gramacho Golf Club last week after revealing he was attracted to the Tour following his appearance at The Senior Open Presented by Rolex last year.
“I’ve played a lot on the PGA of America at home and I came over last summer and played in the The Senior Open at St Andrews,” he said.
“I qualified and got in but then missed the cut, but it was a great experience. It made me want to come back and play some more tournaments on the Staysure Tour.
“They’re good guys over here. They’re such professionals who have played a lot of golf. I had good pairings even at Gramacho and it’s been really good,” Olsen said after playing with Wilson and George Ryall on Day Three.
Olsen’s third round 66 added to his second round of 67, and even after a slow start to the week, where he was four over after nine holes, the American is still pleased with his game in Portugal.
“It’s pretty hard to get round here in that score,” he said. “I’ve got plenty of respect for this place, so I’m really happy with today. I controlled my ball nicely and I just need to go and do that tomorrow.
“I played pretty well yesterday and shot four under. I played a bad first nine on the first day and from then on I’ve done a good job of controlling my ball at a difficult place to do that.”
The American is hoping to follow the lead of countryman Clark Dennis by earning his card at Q-School and becoming a man to watch on the over-50s golf scene.
“A lot of these guys play better in their 50s and I’m sure Clark is one of those guys,” Olsen said. “I want to be one of those guys.
“Some guys’ minds get better and their bodies don’t deteriorate for some reason. For example, Bernhard Langer is 61 and he’s great. I think a lot of guys have played better in their 50s than they did in their 30s and 20s.
“I look forward to trying to be one of those guys. It will give me great satisfaction if I get one of those cards tomorrow. I just need to play each shot on every hole and not try and get too smart.”
Overnight leader André Bossert relinquished the lead early on Day Three as he posted a five over par front nine before eventually gaining a shot and signing for a four over par 75. He will head into the final round in tied eighth on one under par alongside Simon P Brown and Michael Long.
The last man to make the cut was Richard Tinworth in tied 27^th as he finished on five over par after three rounds. Glenn Joyner will also contest the final round after back-to-back birdies on the final two holes meant he jumped from six over par to four over.
The final round will begin at 9.00am local time on Thursday January 31 as the remaining 27 players compete for one of five cards.

P and K win Scottish senior men's team championship

Perth and Kinross won the Scottish senior men's amateur team championship at Stranraer Golf Club today.
They had a total of 374 from the best five individual scores achieved by Stuart McKendrick (Dunkeld), Scott Michie (Kinross), Dave Logie (Craigiehill), Tom McLevy (Blairgowrie), Norman Dyce (Strathmore) and Mark Williamson (Dunkeld).
Lothians, who finished in a triple tie for third place on 381 alongside Fife and Glasgow gained the bronze medal with a better sixth team member score than Fife and Glasgow's sixth team member.
The placings were:

SCOTS WIN SENIOR MEN'S HOME INTERNATIONALS' TITLE

ON COUNTBACK AT SOUTHERNESS

Scotland won the Senior Men's Home Internationals title at Southerness Golf Club today (Thursday) after a countback involving England and Ireland who also finished with 2pt from three games.

The Scots beat England 5-2 and Wales 6.5-0.5 and it was the margin of the latter win that tipped the countback scales in Scotland's favour. Scotland won 15 games, England 13.5 and Ireland 12.

SCOTLAND STORM TO SENIOR MEN’S HOME INTERNATIONALS GLORY

Scotland have been crowned Senior Men’s Home Internationals champions at Southerness once play resumed following a visit from the uninvited Storm Ali.

After losing the second day’s play due to the extreme weather conditions, a change to the original format was agreed with two sessions taking place today, which consisted of seven head-to-head battle, ensuring all three country versus country matches were played.

In the round robin format, Scotland, England and  Ireland all won two out of three matches, so the title was decided on the most match points scored across all three matches.

On the final day, it was Scotland who turned on the style, losing only one match from fourteen. In the morning session, the hosts defeated England 5-2 with Ireland getting the better of Wales by the same score line.

The morning’s battle with the Auld Enemy was a close affair. Scotland lead England 3-2 with two matches on the course, but 4 and 3 victories from both Malcolm Reid and captain Ian Brotherson closed out the match.

With it all to play for in the afternoon matches, England convincingly defeated Ireland 5.5 – 1.5, whilst Scotland took charge early on against Wales and never let up, winning 6.5 – 0.5.

When all was said and done, it couldn’t have been closer, with the winner decided by the team with the highest number of points scored across all three matches. Scotland totalled 15 points, England 13.5 and Ireland 12, meaning Scotland were crowned champions for the first time since 2014, which was also on home soil at North Berwick.

After the victory, we caught up with Scotland Captain, and Southerness member Ian Brotherston, who said: “It’s always a dream come true to win the Senior Men’s Home Internationals, especially at your home course.

“We practised and prepared for this championship well, and as Captain, I have had great support from the team all week.

“We played very well today, we were undefeated in 13 of the 14 matches, the whole team did themselves very proud today.

“We were very disappointed at losing our opening game against Ireland, so yesterday when play was cancelled, we all went along the road to Dumfries and County Golf Club and used their indoor swing studio, so perhaps that was the secret.

“The Home Internationals is a great focus for the year, with the format being foursomes and singles each day, it is a great championship to play. There is fantastic camaraderie within the team, this victory means a lot to all of us, and to do it in Scotland, on home soil, is the icing on the cake.

Chamblee rolls back years as he secures  place in Senior Open at St Andrews

The American, who made his last appearance on the US PGA Tour in 2008, was one of 27 golfers who came through qualifying to book their place on the Old Course at St Andrews from July 26-29. A record 591 qualifiers took part in the traditional Monday Qualifying at Fairmont St Andrews, Ladybank, Lundin Links and Scotscraig, with participants from all four corners of the globe descending on the county of Fife. The 56 year old Chamblee, who shared first place at Scotscraig Golf Club, said: “St Andrews means a lot to everybody in the golf world, but it holds a special place in my heart because I spent the summer of 1982 in Scotland. One of the highlights of my career was playing in The Open in 1995. “So to bring my career in the game full circle, from the amateur game, to the US PGA Tour, to the Senior Open, I couldn’t be happier to have made the field and to play amongst some of the best players to have every played the game. “It’s a real treat for me to see a side of the game I haven’t known for 15 years.” Joining Chamblee from Scotscraig were compatriot John Inman and English amateur Robert Maxfield – CEO of the Professional Golfers’ Association. Also earning their spots were Victor Casado, Vicente Fernandez, Darrell Kestner and amateur G S Lacy. The first results of qualifying came from Ladybank as Fran Quinn finished first on three under par. He was joined automatically by Tommy Tolles and David Shacklady, who successfully earned his Staysure Tour card at Qualifying School earlier this year. A five-way play-off was required for the final four spots, with Bob Ford, amateur Ryan Howison, Mark Ridley and former Walker Cup player Gary Wolstenholme securing their places on the first extra hole. A double bogey 6 at the 18th cost Ken Gallacher (East Kilbride) the halfway lead in the Scottish Seniors' Stroke-play tournament at Drumpellier Golf Club today.
Gallacher had a mixed bag of an eagle 2 at the 18th, birdies at the second, eighth, ninth and 15th as well as bogeys at the first, fourth and 11th in halves of 35 for a one-under-par 70.
A par 4 at the last would have given him the lead but Ronnie Clark (Erskine) claimed that honour with a two-under 69 which started with a bogey at the first but picked up steam with birdies at the second, ninth and 10th. He had had a frustrating last eight holes over which the birdie putts would not drop and he parred them all for halves of 35 and 34.
The field of 78 produced 72 returns, four No Returns, one disqualification and one retirement.

Scottish senior men's open amateur 54-hole tournament

Brotherston's strong late finish for a 70 takes him into two-stroke lead at Bogside

Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and Co) overcame a double bogey 6 at the ninth to stage a strong late finish which carried him into a two-stroke lead over a big field at the Scottish Senior Men's Open amateur tournament at Irvine Bogside Golf Club today.
Brotherson came home in a bogey-free 3 for a two-under-par 70, notching birdies at the par-5 11th, the short 16th and the 18th.
He dislodged the long-time clubhouse leader, Les Bruckner (Hindhead) who matched the par of 72 early in the way.

Seniors' event at Monifieth Links cancelled on Friday

Friday's Scottish Seniors Golf Society "winter" fixture at Monifieth Links was cancelled .. because of the wintry weather.
Next scheduled event is at Drumoig Golf Centre, Leuchars on Friday.

No information available about the West of Scotland Alliance competition reschduled from February 28 to Friday at  Western Gailes. Was it played? No inkling on the website.

Home Internationals this week

R and A NEWS RELEASE

St Andrews: The R and A’s amateur championships and international matches resume this week with The Boys' Home Internationals, the Girls and Ladies Home Internationals and The Seniors Amateur Championship.

 

The Boys' Home Internationals

England will set out to defend the Boys Home Internationals at St Annes Old Links in the North West of England from August 8–10. The round robin international series features the four home countries with each match comprising five morning foursomes followed by ten afternoon singles.

England were crowned 2016 champions after a strong final day performance saw them defeat the holders Scotland 9-6 in the deciding match at Ballyliffin in Donegal.

Alex Fitzpatrick, brother of European Ryder Cup star Matthew, and 2017 Lytham Trophy runner-up Charlie Strickland have both been selected to play for England as they bid to retain the trophy.

The Seniors Amateur Championship

At the same time in Berkshire, American Chip Lutz will aim to secure a fourth Seniors Amateur Championship at Sunningdale’s Old Course from August 9–11. A field of 144 competitors from 17 countries will play 36 holes over the first two days of the championship before the leading 60 players and ties go through to play the final 18 holes on Friday.

In 2016, Lutz completed a hat-trick of titles in dramatic fashion when he holed a 25-foot birdie putt at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off at Formby, beating fellow American Brady Exber and Scotland’s Graham Bell.

Lutz became the seventh American in a row to lift the trophy. He tees off on Wednesday at 2.13pm alongside France’s Francois Illouz and England’s Ian Crowther.

Mann and Robson share top Scot honours on Algarve

 

 Carnoustie professional Fraser Mann (Carnoustie) and Aberdeen amateur Nick Robson (Meldrum House) both shot five-over-par rounds of 77 in the Senior Golf Circuit's Monte Rei Classic opening day at the Algarve venue today (Monday).
Robson had a 7 at the 16th.

Downfield's Kenny Hutton had an 85.

On a day of relatively high scoring, James Murphy matched the par of 72 to be the first-round leader by one shot from Mark Wharton with David Gilford in thirdplace on 74.

 

The Senior Golf Circuit, which is not connected in any way with the European Senior Tour, is open to professionals and amateurs who are 48 years and over.

 

Oldcorn claims top Scot honour in Algarve Senior Stroke play

Spain's Pedro Linhart birdied the final hole (on Saturday) to hold off a late surge from compatriot Miguel Angel Martin and win the fifth Algarve Senior Circuit stroke-play tournament by one stroke after 72 holes over the Pinheiros Altos and Laranjal courses.
Linhart shot 72, 69, 65 and 73 for nine-under-par 279.
Martin made up five strokes on the leader with a final round of 68, after earlier scores of 70, 69 and 73, for 280.
Englishman Stephen McNally (67-72-75-67) finished third on 281.
Compatriot Gary Wolstenholme came fourth on 284 (75-67-71-71).
The leading Scot on 294 was Andrew Oldcorn with rounds of 70, 74, 76 and 74.
