Chapman beats Price in

Seychelles Tour

Championship play-off

Report
Roger Chapman secured his first Staysure Tour title in more than six years after defeating Phillip Price in a play-off at the MCB Tour Championship – Seychelles, the final event of the 2018 season.
Chapman, who won two Senior Majors in 2012, the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open, started the day seven strokes behind overnight leader Miguel Angel Martín but quickly made ground as he birdied the third and ninth holes.
After Martín ran into difficulties on the front nine, Price set the clubhouse target on six under par as he carded the lowest round of the day, a five-under-par 63, which included four consecutive birdies from the 14th to 17th holes.
Chapman came home one under par, and narrowly missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole which would have seen him take the outright lead.
Former World Number One Tom Lehman bogeyed the last hole, leaving Chapman and Price to fight for the final title of the season.
In the play-off, both players found the green on the par five 18th with their second shots, and Chapman holed a left-to-right putt from more than 30 feet. Price missed his putt for eagle, handing Chapman his first regular Staysure Tour victory.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be in the tournament after playing my way in last week in Mauritius,” said Chapman.
“I had surgery at the end of May.  My arm was in a sling, and I didn’t think I’d be playing much golf this year – so I’m thrilled to bits that I’ve made it this far and won the Tour Championship.
“We put a bit of pressure on Miguel, he had a great round yesterday but it’s very difficult to have another good round after a great round. I didn’t think I’d win from seven back.
“To win with an eagle is pretty special. Phil hit a great second shot and I thought ‘I’ve got to hole this’, I did and unfortunately for Phillip, he missed – but that’s golf.
“2012 was my last victory, so to be in the winners’ circle again, I’m absolutely thrilled to bits. I want to thank Paul Anderson at The Berkshire and Gary Nicol who’s helped me this year. They are part of this win.”
After his third-place finish at last week’s MCB Tour Championship – Mauritius, Chapman was awarded a trophy as the winner of the first Indian Ocean Swing after accumulating the most prize money across the two season-ending events.
“To win the Indian Ocean Swing is a real bonus. I finished first and third in these two weeks – you would take that every single time.
“The team at Constance Hotels and MCB have looked after us so well over these two weeks, and we can’t thank them enough for their support.”
Lehman finished third on five under par, while James Kingston joined Martín in a share of fourth place on three under par.
At the conclusion of play, Paul Broadhurst was awarded the John Jacobs Trophy for topping the Staysure Tour Order of Merit for the second time in just three years.
The Englishman finished his year with a tied seventh place finish in Seychelles.

Benidorm Senior Masters

Gomez and Street share lead

with a round to go in Spain

Rafael Gomez and Paul Streeter share the lead going into the final round of the Costa Blanca Benidorm Senior Masters, but will have to hold off the challenge of home favourite Miguel Ángel Jiménez who is just two shots back going into the last day in Spain.

After breaking the course record with a bogey-free eight under par 64, Gomez found the going tougher at Meliã Villaitana Golf Club, carding three birdies and dropping two shots en route to signing for a one under par round of 71

Streeter, who clinched his debut over-50s title at the Travis Perkins Masters in September, began the day four shots off the pace but soared up the leaderboard with a five under par score of 67 which included five birdies and a chip-in eagle on the par five 16th.

With a strong chasing pack behind him, including six-time Staysure Tour winner Peter Fowler, plus the in-form Santiago Luna – who won the Farmfoods European Senior Masters last month – and two-time Senior Major Champion Jiménez, Streeter knows he will have a fight on his hands

“Tomorrow is another new challenge for me,” said Streeter.

“I’ve led before, but I had a big lead then, but this time I’m tied with Rafa, so it will be tough but also great to go out and see what happens.

“It was really important to get off to a good start today. I made a nice birdie on the second, then we got on the third tee and the wind suddenly picked up and changed direction, so it was a good par to make on the par three third.

“I birdied the par five fourth and then hit a great shot into the next hole. So, it was great to get off to a good start as it settles you down and gets you up and running.

“Winning at Woburn gives me the confidence that I know I can win, but it’s a totally different golf course with difference circumstances, so it’s a new challenge.”

A shot behind the leading duo is Fowler after he signed for a six under par round of 66 to charge up the leaderboard on Moving Day.

A further stroke back are home favourites Jiménez and Luna. The Spanish pair both carded three under par rounds of 69 to sit two shots behind the leaders and keep the chances of a home victory alive.
