Caroline wins second English senior title

Cheshire’s Caroline Berry was queen of the greens today as she claimed her second win in the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Enville Golf Club in Staffordshire.

She holed a 25-footer for birdie on the 15^th to close out the final, defeating Paula Carver of Sussex by 4 and 3

“To say I am thrilled is the understatement of the world,” said Berry, from Bromborough Golf Club.

“It gets harder and harder and these youngsters are getting better and better. But sometimes you have the feeling that it’s your year and I felt good coming in to this, good about my game and good about my putting.”

Berry’s game was in all-round great shape in the final, but her putting was outstanding and she holed a number of clutch putts to keep or extend her lead.

In one rare aberration on the 11th, she misjudged a putt from off the green, sending it about 20ft past the pin, but she simply rolled in the return to win the hole with a par.

 “My putting has been the strongest part of my game,” said Berry. “Usually it’s my driving but I struggled little bit at the start of the week. But I felt I hit the ball better and better as the week went on.”

She last won this championship at Littlestone in 2010, but counts this as the sweeter win. “That’s not to take anything away from the girls I played then, it was a really good win. But the standard this week! I had to beat three people who played for England last year to get to the final.”

There was special praise for her husband and caddy, Geoff, who is the Bromborough club professional. “Geoff is a star,” she said “I do think two heads are better than one.”

Berry clinched her place in the final this morning after winning a tight match against senior international Jackie Foster (Bishops Stortford) on the 18^th.  In earlier matches she defeated internationals Karen Jobling (Richmond) and Sue Spencer (Whittington Heath) after beating Jane Sly (Mill Ride) in the first round.

Meanwhile Carver (Worthing) defeated Clarissa Bushell (West Sussex) 3 and 2 in an all-Sussex semi-final clash. Earlier, she beat Amanda Mayne (Saltford), Jan Harrison (Launceston) and Janette McWhirter (Appleby).

This was only Carver’s second appearance in the championship and she commented after the final: “I just didn’t get enough pars, but that takes nothing away from Caroline, she played very solidly.”

In the over-60s Ann Howard Trophy, Nottinghamshire’s Carol Wild successfully defended her title. She beat Sheree Dove-Wilde (Camberley Heath) by one hole.

“I am ecstatic, I can’t believe it” said Wilde, who is the captain of Notts Ladies Golf Club. “I thought it would be tough and I felt the pressure coming into this, even though I’m playing well and my handicap has come down”

The defending champion and the top seed were toppled in the first match-play round of the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Enville Golf Club, Staffordshire.

But the big names to make it safely through include

Staffordshire’s senior internationals Julie Brown (Trentham) – a past champion – and Sue Spencer (Whittington Heath).

Both won on the 17th, with Brown (pictured) knocking out Sharon Eales (Royal Birkdale) and Spencer defeating former stroke play champion Lulu Housman (Wyke Green).

Cheshire’s Caroline Berry – another past winner of this event – got into her stride on the back nine, producing a couple of birdies as she worked to a 5/3 win.  Hertfordshire’s Jackie Foster, who has twice won the senior stroke play, was another fast worker, defeating her opponent on the 13^th.

Elsewhere, the games were much tighter. Last year’s winner, Aileen Greenfield of Sussex, staged a terrific effort in her title defence. She halved the 17^th in birdie and won the 18^th with another birdie to get back to all square against Yorkshire’s Karen Jobling – but bowed out on the 19th.

Top seed Helen Lowe – the 2015 champion from Leicestershire – lost another close match, going out to Somerset’s Amanda Mayne on the 18^th. They reached the 18^th all square but Lowe was wrong footed when her tee shot found a fairway bunker.

“There was never more than one hole in and neither of us deserved to  lose,” said Mayne.

Cheshire’s Gillian Mellor ignited the championship on the first qualifying day with her superb score of one-under par. But her challenge ended today when she lost to Lancashire’s Susan Caton.

Also out is Cheshire’s Cath Rawthore, who won in 2016 and was last year’s runner-up – but was stopped this year by Derbyshire’s Lindsey Shaw. Meanwhile English senior team captain Debbie Richards knocked out another past champion, Janet Melville (Royal Birkdale).

In the over-60s' Ann Howard Trophy there were fewer upsets. Top seed Jayne Fletcher – another Staffordshire player, from Whittington Heath – held on to win on the 18^th, while defending champion Carol Wild from Nottinghamshire won 7 and 6.

Jan Stephenson 'relieved' to earn World Golf Hall of Fame entry

BOSTON, Feb. 5, 2019 – LPGA veteran player and Legends Tour co-founding member Jan Stephenson admits she is relieved to be earning entry into the World Golf Hall of Fame this June.

Stephenson, pictured above, will be inducted in a ceremony coinciding with the U.S. Open Championship in California at Pebble Beach Golf Links in mid-June along with the late Peggy Kirk Bell, Retief Goosen, Billy Payne and Dennis Walters.

“I got passed over a few times and I was starting to think it was never going to happen,” said Stephenson, a Sydney, Australia native and current resident of Tampa, Florida.. “But I’m really excited and I think I will appreciate this and truly savour it more now than if I had got it five to 10 years ago.”

Stephenson was an accomplished amateur in Australia, winning eight titles before turning pro and launching her LPGA career in 1974 -- earning top rookie honours that season. She went on to record 32 professional wins worldwide, including 16 LPGA Tour titles, with three major championships at the 1981 du Maurier Classic, the 1982 LPGA Championship and the 1983 U.S. Women’s Open.

She helped found the Women’s Senior Golf Tour in 2000, which became The Legends Tour, where she has won six tournaments and posted 23 top-10 finishes. She has also played eight times on the World Team in The Legends Tour’s Handa Cup competition.

Stephenson became eligible for World Golf Hall of Fame induction when a change to qualifying criteria more broadly considered nominees’ worldwide wins, impact and merits during respective eras.

“I was ahead of my time because I won a lot overseas, but for many years, those international wins weren’t recognized, which made it tough,” she noted. “It’s nice to finally get in on the merit side once they changed the rules.”

The Australian bought a golf course two years ago in Palm Harbor, Florida, and she now owns and operates Jan Stephenson’s Tarpon Woods. She offers special programs and instruction for disabled military veterans and first responders, as well as for blind golfers at her course. Last October, she hosted 50 blind golfers from ages 14-80 for National Blind Golf Day.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s very rewarding,” said Stephenson, who has also been involved in golf course design.

A member of The Legends Tour’s Hall of Fame since 2013, Stephenson’s interests are diverse. She has a wine brand and owns a rum distillery. An image influencer on the LPGA in the 1980s when she embraced sex appeal to attract interest in the women’s tour, the Australian has never been shy to try new things and take new steps – including her 2011 appearance as a contestant in Australia’s “Dancing With The Stars” television show.

“I’ve had like three careers and three lives,” said Stephenson, who was honoured with the Order of Australia Medal in 2018 for her contributions to the game of golf.

Stephenson will make a public appearance at the Seattle Golf Show Feb. 16-17, at CenturyLink Field Event Center. She will discuss her Hall of Fame induction, as well as her return to the Pacific Northwest to compete in the Suquamish Clearwater Legends Cup presented by The Boeing Company. That Seattle-area event is set for June 5-8, at White Horse Golf Club in Kingston, Wash., one day before her Hall of Fame induction dinner in Pebble Beach.

While Stephenson currently spends a lot of time orchestrating and playing in charity events, she jumps at the chance to compete in Legends Tour events each season and is looking forward to the Legends Tour’s Washington tournament.

“There’s still nothing like competition,” she said. “Sometimes I just can’t wait to play.”

Irish keep Senior Women's title despite losing to Scots 
Scotland beat defending champions Ireland 4.5-3.5 on the final day of the Senior Women's Home Internationals  at Burnam and Berrow Golf Club but, despite that, Ireland won the title for the second year in a row.
Ireland, England and Scotland all won two of their three matches and the Irish came out on top with 15 games won to 13.5 by both the Scots and the English.
England hammered wooden spoonists Wales 7-1 in the other match today.

Elaine Moffat wins Vets' title after toppling

Sheena Wood in semi-finals at Blairgowrie

Former Scottish women's amateur champion Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) toppled title-holder Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) by 4 and 3 in the morning semi-finals on her way to winning the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association championship at Blairgowrie Golf Club's Lansdowne course today.
Moffat went on to beat last year's beaten finalist, Jennifer Bryans (Harburn) by 6 and 4 in the final.
Back in June, Miss Moffat won the Scottish senior women's amateur championship, beating Sheena Wood by two holes in the final.
So a title double for Elaine in her "rookie year" as a senior. She had her 50 birthday last December

Defending champion Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) will play former Scottish women's amateur title-holder Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) in the first semi-final of the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association championship over the Lansdowne course, Blairgowrie on Monday morning (9.05).
The other semi-fnal (9.15) will feature Jennifer Bryans (East), beaten in last year's final, and Carol Purves (Borders).
In this afternoon's quarter-finals, Moffat beat Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) by 5 and 4 while Wood beat Liz Stewart 5 and 4.
Bryans beat Sally Downs (Galloway) 7 and 6 and Purves bat Margaret McGregor (Dumfries) 1 hole.

SHEENA AND ALISON FINISH WELL DOWN SENIOR BRITISH FIELD at CRAIL

Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) and Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) finished well down the Senior British women's open amateur championship field at Crail Golfing Society where East Berkshire-based Laura Webb from Ireland won the title by nine shots with a four-under-par total of 140 (67-73).

Sheena, with four double bogeys in her second round, scored 81 and 88 for 169 and a share of 57th place.

Alison shot 84 and 97 for 191 and joint 81st place.

Senior British women's open amateur cut to 36 holes

Round 2 of the Senior British women's open amateur championship at Crail Golfing Society was abandoned because of the high winds and rain today (Wednesday).
The scheduled 54-hole championship, now cut to 36 holes, will conclude on Thursday

Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) was the leading Scot in the field of 90 at the end of the opening day of the Senior British Women's Amateur Championship at Crail Golfing Society's links.
She shot a two-over-par 74 to be joint 12th, seven strokes behind the Irish-born leader Laura Webb (East Berkshire) whose opening five-under-par 67 gave her a three-stroke overnight leader.
Linda Allan (Glenbervie) and Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) were joint 46th on 79, one ahead of Donna Jackson (Troon Ladies).
North-east players had a disappointing day with Sheena Wood marking up double bogeys at the 16th and 16th in her 81 for a share of 56th place.
Fiona De Vries (StRegulus) and Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) were joint 75th on 84.
Frances Millar (Carnoustie Caledonia) was last of 90 with an opening score of 90.

Guatemala star claims top spot at the Irish Senior Women’s open Stroke Play

 

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Beatriz Arenas. Not only did she proudly represent her country at the World Amateur Team Championships in Carton House, but has now claimed the title of Irish Senior Women’s Open Champion. Beatriz carded yet another 82 to claim the top spot by two shots from Sheena McElroy (Grange), Gertie McMullen (The Island) and Gigi Higgins (USA).

Ireland claimed the top spot in the Nations Cup finishing with a total of 491. The team consisted of Sheena McElroy, Carol Wickham and Gertie McMullen and were a full 12 shots clear of the chasing pack.

Beatriz Arenas takes the lead going into the final day at Grange

 

Consistency is key and that's exactly what Guatemala's Beatriz Arenas has brought to the table this week at the Irish Senior Women's Open Amateur stroke-play championship.

After another steady 82, Beatriz has shot to the top of the leaderboard with 18 holes to play,

However, hot on her heels are Grange's very own Sheena McElroy and Gigi Higgins (USA), only two shots back on a total of 166. These three players make up the final group going out tomorrow at 11:48 and is sure to draw a substantial home crowd.

Scots lose 4-1 to Ireland in European senior men's team championship

Scotland were well beaten, 4-1, by Ireland in the quarter-finals of the European senior men's amateur team golf championship at Diamond Country Club, Austria today (Thursday).

Scotland failed to qualify for the championship flight of the European senior women's amateur team championship at Mont Garni Golf Club, Belgium. They have received a bye into the semi-finals of Flight B in which they will play Switzerland.
In the women's championship flight, the results were:
Spain 4, Netherland 1; Sweden 3, England 2; Germany 3, France  2; Belgium 4, Ireland 1.

SHEENA WOOD SHINES AS LEADING SCOT IN BELGIUM BUT WE FAIL TO MAKE TOP GRAE

Aberdeen's Sheena Wood, joint 22nd in a field of 108 players, had the lowest 36-hole aggregate of 155, with rounds of 78 and 77, of the six Scots competing in the European senior women's team championship at Mont Garni, Belgium.

Scotland finished ninth in the stroke-play and only the leading eight teams qualified for the championship flight. The Scots have a bye through to Friday's semi-finals in Flight B in which the other teams are Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Finland, Norway and the Czech Republic.

Sheena Wood leads the Senior Scots in Belgium


Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies), pictured, fared the best of the Scots in the international field of 108 with a round of five-over-par 78 in the European Senior Women's Amateur Championship at Golf du Mont Garni, Mons in Belgium today when bad weather delayed the start by a couple of hours.
Gillian Kyle was the only other Scot to break 80. She had a 79.
Sylvie Van Molle (Belgium) and Laura Webb (Northern) were joint leaders by two strokes with three-under-par 70s.

Scotland teams for Senior Championships named

Scottish Golf has named its teams for the forthcoming European Senior Team Championships and Senior Home Internationals, taking place in September and October.
The European Senior Men’s Team Championship takes place at Diamond Golf Club in Austria from September 4 to 8, with Erskine’s Ronnie Clark, winner of this year’s Scottish Senior Men’s Open Championship, spearheading the side.
Clark, along with Dumfries and County’s Ian Brotherston, were part of the team who won the title most recently in 2016 in Slovenia
Former Curtis Cup player and Scotland Women’s International, Alison Davidson (Stirling), will represent the Senior team for the first time when the European Senior Ladies Team Championships takes place in Belgium, from September 4 to 8.
Also making her senior international debut is Elaine Moffat (St Regulus), winner of the Scottish Senior Women’s Match Play Championship and current joint leader of the Senior Women’s Order of Merit.
In the Home Internationals, Southerness will play host to the Men’s Championship, where Scotland are looking to win the title for the first time since 2014 when it was last held in Scotland at North Berwick. The Senior Ladies were last victorious in the annual home matches back at Newport in 2009.
