Nairn's Robert Smith leads way at Luffness New

Day 2 Report: Scottish Senior Men’s Open Championship

An extremely tough day in blustery conditions at Luffness New Golf Club saw Nairn’s Robert Smith finish top of the pile after posting the low round of the day, a one-over par 71.

Smith will now take a two-shot lead into tomorrow’s final round as he looks to claim the title for the first time.

English Senior Men’s Open Champion, Ian Attoe, was one of the other big movers on day two as he moved himself firmly into contention as part of the chasing pack. Taking advantage of an early tee time, Attoe posted a two-over par round of 72 and sits just two shots back on three-over.

Day one leader, Graham Bell, found the conditions tough as he battled his way to a six-over par round of 76. Although he will be disappointed to have given up the lead on day two, Bell still heads into the final round just two shots back from Smith.

Englishman Ian Clarke is also part of the chasing pack on three-over after a second round of 72; a round that included 16 pars and two bogeys.

2018 champion, Ronnie Clark, is safely through to tomorrow’s final round but will have his work cut out if he is to defend his title. Clark posted a second round of four-over to sit on sixover for the championship.

The cut for this year’s Scottish Senior Men’s Open Championship fell at 11-over par with the top-60 and ties progressing to Friday’s final round.

Brora win Senior Northern Counties Cup for fourth time

By ROBIN WILSON
For a third time the James Braid classic golf links at Brora hosted the Senior Northern Counties Cup from Wednesday to Friday last week where the host club added its name to the B D Fraser Cup for a fourth time, the two previous years being when the club last hosted the competition, 2006 and 2012, and in 2003 at Inverness.

Brora's first team of Roddy Cameron, Tony Gill, Charlie Tulloch and Norman Elliot met the Nairn team of Robert Smith, Peter Saggers, Pat Tomisson and Walter Morris, the cup holders, and with the same line-up that had also won in 2016.

In the double foursomes competition Brora had beaten Moray in their semi- final by a comfortable four holes, +3 and +1, and were then hoping for an all-Sutherland final against rival neighbours, Royal Dornoch who,  in their quarter-final tie against Nairn Dunbar, won at the 20th but in their extended semi-final meeting with Nairn both of their couples lost the 19th hole to miss a final with Brora.

It was touch and go as to whether the final would extend into extra holes. Brora's first string of Cameron and Gill took a two-hole lead to the final par three 18th tee against Smith and Saggers who found the green from the tee to make a par.
Brora came up short from the tee but pitched close, leaving a putt for a half and hold their two-hole lead - but the putt was missed. The second couples watched from behind, knowing the pressure was back on them with their game level.
Both final shots missed the green, Nairn through the back and Brora short in the deep hollow below the green. From the back of green Nairn chipped first but came up short of the pin.
From the hollow Tulloch (68) scuttled up the chip with a six-iron and got inside the Nairn ball. Morris's Nairn putt shaved the hole, leaving Elliot two putts for the half which he took for the cup and the gold medals that go with it.

Brora's defence next year will be at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club.

Edzell seniors to the fore at Duff House Royal

By ALASDAIR MACGREGOR
Edzell players filled the top two spots at the Scottish Seniors Golfing Society North of Scotland event at Duff House Royal.
Glenn Taylor won the gold medal for top scratch prize with rounds of 71 and 64 for a one-under-par total of 135. He finished three shots ahead of clubmate Gary Tough, the overnight leader, who added a three-over-par 71 to his opening round of 67.
Taylor looked like finishing lower than 64 after recording eight birdies in his opening 14 holes to stand seven under par for his round with four holes to play. However, he dropped three shots on the tough finishing stretch of the Banff course.
Taylor birdied the first, fourth, seventh, eighth, 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th, but bogeyed the fifth, 15th, 17th and 18th.
Gary Tough got off to a great start with birdies at the first two holes. He added another birdie at the eighth but dropped shots at the seventh, 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 17th.
There was a three-way tie for third place on 140 between Stewart Henderson (Hamilton) (74, 66), Duncan Low (Gullane) (70, 70) and Graham Bell (Downfield) (70, 70).
The bronze medal for best handicap score was won by local player Ian Angus (3), who had net scores of 67 and 68 for a total of 135. He won by one shot from Andrew MacGill (Kemnay) (7) who had net rounds of 67, 69 for a total of 136.

Lancs win England senior title

showdown

winners
Lancashire pulled off the great escape today when they snatched victory from Sussex in the title showdown for the English Senior Men’s County Championship

Bryan Hughes drained a 30ft putt on the 18th at Stanton-on-the-Wolds to win his match by one hole and give Lancashire their third win in this championship.

“It was the putt of my life,” said the 2017 British Senor Champion. “And it was the first one I holed today!”

Lancashire’s 5-4 win was a result which had seemed highly unlikely as little as 45 minutes earlier and underlined, once again, the team’s ability to dig deep when it counts. “You couldn’t write this script,” said team member Neil Self, who contributed a 5 and 4 win to the scoreline.
Tony Flanagan, who won 3 and 2 in the singles, added: “I don’t know how we did that. We’ve been behind every day.”
That’s been the theme of their championship. Each day they’ve trailed their opposition, each day they’ve frayed their captain’s nerves – but each day they’ve kept themselves in it and, finally, claimed the prize.
Their emotional captain Mike Gray said: “I have always believed in them but at times today I thought someone up there didn’t!
“When they have to, they dig in, they deliver. They play for the team and they just don’t give up. And winning this is just a wonderful feeling,” added Gray, who was making his seventh visit to county finals, five as a player and twice as a winning captain.
Today’s match was always going to be tight. Sussex, with two good wins behind them, were clearly in good and confident form. And the action unfolded as predicted. The foursomes were shared with two tense matches going to the 18th.
As the singles got underway Sussex appeared to have a real grip on the match. They were ahead in four games as the players went through six holes and up in five at the half way stage.
Lancashire got the first point, courtesy of Neil Self, but Martin King delivered a major boost for Sussex when he beat British Senior Champion Trevor Foster 3 and 2. “I just played great match play golf. I was in trouble a few times on the back nine and Trevor probably thought he would get one back but I escaped,” he said.
The next point went Lancashire’s way, thanks to Tony Flanagan, but Sussex were up in the other three games on the course. It was the signal for the Lancashire rally to begin.
Ian Crowther brought them within touching distance of an unlikely victory when he came from behind to win the last hole to halve his game. Then Bryan Hughes completed the comeback with his last hole birdie. It was the only time he was up in his match – but it was enough!
In the final game on the course Tony Flanagan kept fighting and took the action to the 18th, but Martin Galway made sure the point went to Sussex, who are runners-up for the second year in succession.
In the day’s other match Dorset defeated the host county, Nottinghamshire 6.5-2.5 to take third place.

Day 1 Report: Senior Men's Home Internationals

England and Ireland recorded victories in blustery conditions on the opening day of the Senior Men’s Home Internationals at Southerness.

Hosts Scotland got off to a good start against Ireland in the morning foursomes, taking a 2-1 lead into lunch after Ronnie Clarke (Erskine) and Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth) notched a 3&2 victory against the Irish pairing of John Mitchell and Barry Hobson, while Robert Smith (Nairn) and Malcolm Reid (Sonning) defeated Maurice Kelly and Michael Quirke 5&4.

The afternoon session, however, was all about Ireland. As conditions worsened, Ireland fared better than the hosts, only losing one match on their way to securing a 5.5 – 1.5 victory.

Following the victory, Irish Captain Michael Coote said: “After losing the morning foursomes, we were on the back foot. In our team meeting between sessions, there was a lot of emphasis on keeping the ball low in the wind and we managed that in the afternoon and we are absolutely thrilled to get the better of Scotland on their home patch, especially in difficult conditions.

“The Senior Home Internationals is always a key focus for us throughout the year as there is great competition for places on the Irish team.

“It is always lovely to come to Scotland, the home of golf. I am huge into links golf, and my first reaction to Southerness is that it is the purest links golf I have seen. Southerness is a gem, a true treasure.”

In the day’s other match, England, who are looking to make it three-in-a-row with a victory this week, overcame Wales 6 – 3.

England led 2.5 – 0.5 after the foursomes, then singles victories for Rupert Kellock (Sunningdale), Richard Norton (Beverley & East Riding), and Ian Attoe, along with a half point for Rich Jones (Rotherham), helped England to the victory.

England Captain Roy Smethurst said: “In extreme conditions, the players played really well and we are delighted to narrowly beat Wales in what was a highly contested and well fought match.”

England senior title for Durham’s Kirkpatrick

John-kirkpatrick-hero
County Durham PE teacher John Kirkpatrick tamed the winds on Sunday to win the English Senior Men’s County Champion of Champions' tournament by five strokes at Woodhall Spa.

The Ramside Hall member was four-under on Sunday and three-under for 36 holes as he claimed the title at his first attempt, having just joined senior ranks.

He adds this to an impressive set of county honours which spans four decades. Kirkpatrick won the Cumbria county championship as an 18-year-old, followed up with the RAF championship in 1986 and then won the Durham men’s county championship five years ago and added the Durham seniors this year.
But the main reason that he’s so pleased to win is because “I missed my son’s engagement party last night so I was under a bit of pressure!” Now it seems a double celebration is on the cards for the Kirkpatrick family.
Kirkpatrick opened his challenge on Saturday with a score of one-over 74 on the Hotchkin course and he trailed Bedfordshire’s Philip Sutton (Dunstable Downs) by three shots.
On Sunday, with stiff winds blowing, the pair went out together in the final group and Fitzpatrick had caught his rival after three holes and held a two shot lead by the turn. He played the front nine in three-under and, despite heading into the winds on the way in, he was one-under on the homeward half.
“I haven’t had a three-putt in 36 holes and the greens are rapid, so I was pleased with that,” said Kirkpatrick, who plays off plus-two. “And I didn’t have a double bogey.”
He teaches PE at the Durham Sixth Form Centre, which boasts a golf academy. “We’ve got some very good young golfers, especially girls. We’ve sent four to American universities in the last couple of years,” he said.
Sutton finished as runner-up on two-over par, while Cheshire’s Martyn Grimley (Ringway) was third on six-over, having shot one-under today.

No place like home for Downfield's Graham Bell, winner of seniors' autumn meeting

Downfield's Graham Bell and Derek Paton (Dunnikier Park) led the field at the end of the first round and they were still there in first and second places after the second and final round of the Scottish Senior Golfing Society's autumn meeting at Downfield Golf Club, Dundee.
Bell, playing over his home course, headed a field of well over 100 with so-steady rounds of 70 and 71 for a three-under-par total of 141. His winning margin would have been greater but, after birdieing the 10th, 11th and 12th in his second round, he bogeyed the 17th and 18th holes.
Paton, the only danger, left himself with mission impossible after bogeying the second, third and fifth in his second round. He did recover a bit to birdie the fourth, 11th, 12th and 14th, finishing with rounds of 70 and 73 for 143.
Ronnie Clark (Erskine) bounced back from a double bogey 6 at the first to birdie the second, fourth, 13th and 15th in coming through to fill third place on 145 (73-72).

Bell and Paton share seniors' lead on 70 at Downfield

Graham Bell (Downfield) and Derek Paton (Dunnikier Park) set the pace with two-under-par rounds of 70  at the head of a field of over 100 for the two-day autumn meeting of the Scottish Seniors Golf Society at Downfield Golf Club, Dundee.
For Bell it was the proverbial "game of two halves." He bogeyed the first, second and third holes, reaching the turn in three-over 38. But hit form with birdies at the 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th and 16th for 32 home.
Paton also found the inward half easier than the outward holes. He bogeyed the third but parred to the turn in 36. Then he birdied the 11th, 14th and 17th in 34 home.
The leading North-east players were Albert Smith (Duff House Royal) and Andrew Campbell (Murcar Links), both on the 76 mark.
