NEW SENIORS CIRCUIT IS OPEN TO
MID-RANGE HANDICAPPERS
Former Walker Cup player Ian Hutcheon leads the Scottish Seniors’ Order of Merit but Gordon MacDonald, captain of the Scottish Seniors Golf Society, is keen to get across the message that the new Scottish Seniors Circuit is for double-figure handicap players as well as “golden oldies” such as Hutcheon and Charlie Green.
“We are taking entries until the Friday before each event and I am sure that we will get capacity fields in 2008 but at the moment we are still getting players telling us they did not know about the new seniors events,” said Gordon, winner of the Spanish open seniors’ title for the past two years and also a past Scottish seniors' open champion (pictured right).
“We are also not getting entries from the 10, 11 and 12-handicappers. They have many prizes to play for at these events but I just don’t think they are aware of the opportunities for them.”
For the Scottish Seniors Circuit, which has the blessing of the Scottish Golf Union, the minimum age has been lowered from 55 to 50.
The next 36-hole open events coming up are at Nairn Dunbar on July 19-20, at Hamilton on July 26-27 and at Monifieth on August 2-3.
