Scottish men's senior open amateur stroke-play championship

HUTCHEON LEADS BY FIVE AS
48 PLAYERS WITH 158 OR BETTER
QUALIFY FOR FINAL ROUND

A total of 48 players with 36-hole totals of 158 or better qualified for tomorrow's third and final round in the Scottish men's open amateur senior stroke-play championship at Drumpellier Golf Club.
Ian Hutcheon, pictured right, from Monifieth stayed on course for a third win. He had a 73 for 143 and increased his overnight lead of three strokes to five from George Paterson of the Aberdeen Links' municipal club, Northern. George scored 75 in his second round for 148.
Hutcheon was one of the early starters and he had birdies at the third, sixth and 17th but a double bogey 6 at the 18th and single bogeys at the second, eighth and ninth in halves of 37 and 36.
If Hutcheon has a serious rival over the last 18 holes, it can only be George Paterson because the five players in joint third place are eight strokes behind the leader on 151.
Two of the Scotland team who won last year's senior home internationals' title at Dunbar failed to survive the second-round cut. Gordon MacDonald (Callander) and Brian Grieve (King James VI), both of whom finished joint third behind Stephen Ellis 12 months ago, made their exit today, MacDonald on 161 and Grieve on 163.
For a time, in mid-afternoon, the projected cut was as low as 155 before the scores began to rise.
Royal Aberdeen's John Johnston wasn't going to make it if it stayed at 155. John finished with a triple bogey 7 for a 76 and a tally of 157, which in the end got him through with a shot to spare.
Johnston had an uninspired outward half of 40 with bogeys at the first, fourth, sixth and eighth. Then he lifted his game with birdies at the 12th and 13th only to crash heavily at the last.
