Scottish senior open amateur stroke-play championship
IAN HUTCHEON LEADS BY THREE SHOTS WITH
A 73 IN FIRST ROUND AT DRUMPELLIER
So is it a case already of "Who's going to be second?" to Ian Hutcheon, the three-stroke leader after only one round of the Scottish senior men's open stroke-play championship at Drumpellier.
Hutcheon certainly knows what it takes to win his native over-55s' crown because he did it in 2003 and 2004.
Ian was the only man in the capacity field of 144 to get under the testing par of 71 with a 70.
He made his round with four birdies on the outward half, at the second, third, seventh and ninth. A couple of bogeys knocked him back to "only" two under par for the first nine.
A bogey at the 18th chipped a shot off his overnight lead.
George Paterson, from the Aberdeen Links club Northern, did well to return a 73 to be Hutcheon's nearest challenge at the end of the day.
Defending champion Stephen Ellis from Cowal could do no better than a 77 and even Gordon MacDonald, one of the driving forces behind the new SGU Seniors Circuit this summer, had to settle for an 82. Gordon is a former winner of this title and he has won the Spanish senior open championship for the past two years.
The big field is thinned out considerably after the second round. Only 44 and ties will progress.
