TENNANT CUP FIREWORKS BY CRAIG

THE WONDER OF WATSON: CRAIG LEADS

JAMIESON BY FIVE SHOTS AT HALFWAY

Former British amateur champion Craig Watson turned the clock back a few years with a vintage performance to lead by five strokes from a good-class field at the halfway stage of the Tennant Cup today.

Watson, playing out of the East Renfrewshire club, shot rounds of 68 and 67 over Glasgow Gailes links – against a CSS of 74 morning and afternoon – for a 36-hole tally of 135.

Scott Jamieson (Cathkin Braes) dashed up to Ayrshire from Kent after a Friday morning exit from the British amateur championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club to be Watson’s nearest rival on 140.

Jamieson, who tied with Watson for the Edward Trophy over two rounds at the same course in April, was a bit travel-weary with an opening score of 76 but then he slashed 12 strokes off that after lunchtime with a brilliant score of seven-under-par 64.

The final two rounds switch to Glasgow Golf Club’s Killermont course on Sunday.
