HORSCHEL GAVE CADDIE MILLION-DOLLAR BONUS

FROM GOLF.COM
By NICK MENTA
It's customary for a caddie to receive 10 percent of his player's winnings upon victory. Billy Horschel's caddie ended up with 10 percent of $10 million.

Horschel, pictured, took home the 2014 FedEx Cup and the eight-figure annuity that comes with the trophy. He collected around $13.5 million in a two-week period, including his triumph at the BMW Championship.
And according to GolfWeek's Jim McCabe, Horschel proved just as talented giving away the money as he did winning it.

"The $10,000 he left to the locker-room attendants at East Lake Golf Club, site of his title-clinching victory, started things. Family and “team” members were rewarded. When caddie Micah Fugitt learned of his boss’ goodwill – a $1 million bonus – he was speechless.
“Shock, happiness, joy,” said Fugitt, who will set up college funds for his two children. “You have such a wide range of emotions.”

Horschel, of course, was not selected for the USA Ryder Cup team that flopped at Gleneagles. Tom Watson named his team too
early to take into account Horschel's late-season bonanza.
Would Billy have made a difference? Well, he certainly would not have weakened the American line-up!

Mostly, this: “He’s always been great about showing gratitude to people like that.”

MONTY IN THE MOOD - LEADS WITH A 66
FROM CBS Sports.com

Colin Montgomerie had five birdies in an eight-hole stretch on the back nine, on his way to a 66 (-6) for a one-shot lead after one round of the Champions Tour's ACE Group Classic at Twin Eagles Golf Club, Naples, Florida.
The Scot, who did not play well last week, is followed by Tommy Armour III 67.

Defending champion Kirk Triplett and Lee Janzen are at 68.
Monty put himself in the mood by holing a 40ft birdie putt at his first hole. On the back nine, he birdied Nos. 10, 12, 13, 16 and 17.
Armour holed four putts of more than 12 feet, including a 40-footer at the sixth for one of his six birdies. He had a bogey at the 14th.
Paul Goydos, last week's US Champions Tour winner, was three shots back. Bernhard Langer, who had five victories last season, is five behind.

SECOND-ROUND 62 BY JASON DAY
 NEWS RELEASE
Weather conditions remain ideal along the California coast, where a former champion now shares the top spot on the leaderboard at the AT and T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Here's how things look at the halfway point, as Brandt Snedeker and Matt Jones are one shot clear of the field:
Leaderboard: Brandt Snedeker (-12), Matt Jones (-12), Justin Hicks (-11), Charlie Beljan (-10), Michael Putnam (-10), Daniel Berger (-10), Billy Horschel (-10), David Hearn (-10)
What it means: Snedeker won this event in 2013, and he is again positioned to contend for the trophy after a 67 at Spyglass Hill, the most difficult of the three courses used this week. He's joined by Jones, who won last year in Houston, though a host of contenders sit just off the pace with one round to go before the field is trimmed to the top 60 plus ties.
Round of the day: Jason Day was well off the pace after an even-par 72 in the opening round, but the Aussie bounced back to card a 9-under 62 Friday at Monterey Peninsula. Just one week after winning at Torrey Pines, he moved up to 9 under overall and three shots behind the co-leaders heading into the weekend.
Best of the rest: Beljan won at Disney in 2012 and lost in a playoff at Riviera in 2013, and he is again in the mix after a 63 at Monterey Peninsula. The veteran had nine birdies against just one bogey during his second round, including a run of five birdies in six holes from Nos. 1-6.
Biggest disappointment: It wasn't a disaster, but a 1-over 72 did drop John Daly from the first page of the leaderboard to the middle of the pack. Daly wasn't able to build on his momentum from an opening 65, making just two birdies all day at Monterey Peninsula. Amid ideal conditions, he was the only player currently in the top 60 who failed to shoot par or better in the second round.
Main storyline heading into Saturday: The player to watch is Snedeker, a former champ who appears in command of his game after hitting all 18 greens in regulation during his second round. He is one of only two players (along with Horschel) who has yet to make a bogey this week, and both will head back to the host course for each of the next two rounds.
Quote of the day: "I know what it takes to get it done around here." - Snedeker

JIMENEZ COPES WITH HEAVY COLD TO LEAD  THAILAND CLASSIC
                                                                                                              EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
He may be the oldest player in the field but Spanish star Miguel Angel Jiménez showed the rest how it is done with a second-round, six under par 66 to move to the top of the leaderboard at the inaugural True Thailand Classic
The 51 year old, who has won 21 titles on The European Tour, fired seven birdies and a bogey despite suffering from a heavy cold to reach 11 under par overall, one ahead of Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who signed for a 67.
Another home favourite, Thongchai Jaidee, is another shot back at nine under after also carding a 66, alongside Australian Scott Hend (68) and Canadian Richard T Lee (67).
It was a good day for the Thais as 22 year old Panuphol Pittiyarat won a four-storey townhouse at Black Mountain, worth around €300,000, for A hole-in-one at the par three 14th.
Quotes

Miguel Angel Jiménez
“I’m very happy. I am disappointed to make bogey on the last but overall I played very solid and made a lot of birdies. You’re always happy when you’re under par – and the more under par you are, the happier you are. I was seven under par with one hole to play, but I finished six under par, but that’s the game. I was hitting shots right at the flags today.

"You need to be in the right places on the greens. You need to put the ball on the right side of the hole because the putts are very fast. I like it. I have a heavy cold and I’m very bunged up and slept terribly last night, but apart from that I’m fine.”

Kiradech Aphibarnrat

“I’ve been striking the ball well and haven’t made many mistakes. I got into trouble on 18 in the first round and I missed a short putt on that hole as well today. But apart from that, it has been good. I’m happy with the way I’m playing right now and it’s a huge boost to my confidence. I’ve got my family and golf fans here this week and I’m just trying to perform well.”

Thongchai Jaidee

“I hit a lot of good shots but missed a few short putts. I missed from three feet three times. Otherwise I played great today and hit the ball very well. It should’ve been more than six under today. Sometimes you lose your confidence with the putter and the greens are very tricky here – a lot of guys are struggling.

"But it’s great to be playing at home in Thailand and I’m performing well. I’m two behind so that’s not too bad. I’ll be trying to catch up tomorrow.”
