 Howie lets big lead slip and has only

 one-shot advantage over Watt

PLF Scottish schoolboys champion Darren Howie from Peebles leads the field by one shot with a round to go in the Nick Faldo Junior Series' Scottish boys championship at The Duke's Course, St Andrews.
The age group winners (boys' Under-21, Under-18 and Under-16)  and the girls' Under-21 and Under-16 champions will be the five players who will advance to the Faldo Grand Final in the autumn.
Howie has matched the par of 71 in his first two rounds for a tally of 142 and a slight advantage over Inverallochy's Marc Watt who has shot 73-70 for 142.
Four players share third place on 144 - Mark Napier (Turnhouse) 73-71, Michael Brodie (Strathmore) 73-71, Chris Maclean (Balmore) 72-72, and James A Wilson (Balmore) 73-71
Howie had the chance to establish a well-nigh unassailable lead after 36 holes when, out in 33, he covered the first 10 holes in his second round in four under par.  
But he lost his rhythm and came back to the field with an inward half of 41, bogeying four of the last eight holes.
Watt had had rounds of 73 and 70  for a tally of one-over 143. His second round included a double bogey 7 at the long ninth but five birdies in halves of 37-33 helped to put him back on track. But for a bogey at the 17th he would have been level with leader Howie whose older brother Craig was Scottish boys champion in his day.
Overnight leader George Duncan (Windyhill) fell back into the pack with a 79 - 10 shots more than he used in the first round - for 148. Duncan opened his second round with an eagle 3 but followed it with a 9 at the par-4 s econd and double bogey 6s at the fourth and 13th in halves of 41-38.
The boys' age-group category leaders are:
Under-21 - 144 Michael Brodie,Chris Maclean and James A Wilson.
Under-18 - 144 Mark Napier
Under-16 - 142 Darren Howie
