Renfrewshire overpower Ayrshire in boys' match at Greenock

NEWS RELEASE FROM RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
Greenock Golf Club was the venue for the boys’ match between Renfrewshire Golf Union and Ayrshire.  Renfrewshire went into the match unbeaten and with aspirations to win the West of Scotland league for the first time.

There were a number of the team unavailable for selection due to holidays and other tournaments but team managers Graham McGee and Lyall Campbell had every confidence in the team selected.  This confidence was fully justified as, with torrential rain making life difficult for both teams, Renfrewshire recorded a 6.5 to 1.5 victory.

Although the opening game between Ranfurly Castle’s Angus Frood resulted in a win for his opponent, Alex Murray (Troon Welbeck), two and one, this was the only loss on the day.  All the boys played well but there were two outstanding wins.  First, Jorg Irving from Elderslie had a convincing six and five win over the experienced Loudon player, Greg Hampshire.
Then Caldwell’s Alastair McNaughton faced up to Luke Murdoch (Loudon) who had won last season’s Scottish Junior Tour event.  Alastair recorded an amazing seven and six win.

With two matches to play, Lanarkshire away and Dunbartonshire at home, Renfrewshire Golf Union is starting to make room on the trophy cabinet shelf!
