Three-day event starts at The Duke's, St Andrews

By George! Duncan sets pace with 69 in Nick

Faldo Series' Scottish championship

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Windyhill's George Duncan squeezed four birdies out of the tough The Duke's Course at St Andrews to set the pace with a two-under-par 69 in the first round of the three-day Nick Faldo Series' Scottish boys' championship.
Duncan leads by two from Edzell's Aidan Smith  and PLF Scottish schoolboys champion Darren Howie (Peebles).
Jamie Stewart (Old Ranfurly), one of the title favourites after his impressive victory in the Scottish Under-16 boys' championship over the Arbroath links last week, could do no better than  Hfour-over-par 75 with five bogeys and two birdies.
Duncan birdied the fifth, eighth, 11th and 14th, dropping shots only at the 10th and 16th in haves of 34 (two under) and level par 35.
Smith had an eagle 2 at the 353yd 13th but promptly bogeyed the next two holes in halves of 36-35
Howie birdied the first, fifth and 10th but ruined his card with a double bogey 7 at the sixth and also dropped a late shot at the short 16th in halves of 36-35.
Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) leads the much smaller girls field with a one-over-par 72 - three shots ahead of Natash Slater from Furness across the Border. English entries are permitted to this championship.
