OVERNIGHT LEADER MADE TOO MANY LAST-ROUND MISTAKES

BROTHERSTON JOINT FOURTH FINISH

IN EUROPEAN SENIOR AMATEUR CH/P

Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County), joint overnight leader, made a dismal start to the final round and finished joint fourth in the European senior men's amateur championship at RCG Puerta de Hierro, Madrid today.
Brotherston, whose rounds of 73 and 72 had given him a winning chance, never recovered from a nightmare start to the final round - bogeys at the first, second, third and fifth.
The Doonhamer did birdied the eighth, 11th 14th, interspersed with further bogeys at the 10th, 12th and 15th.
The final blow was a double bogey 6 at the 16th which saw him finished with a 78 for 223 - only two shots behind the winner, France-based Englishman Clive Jones who shot 72-77-72 for 221.
Also on the 223 mark alongside Brotherston was first-round leader John Ambridge (Moor Park) (71-75-77) and Stephen East (Moortown) with scores of 78, 75 and 70, his last round being the best of the championship.
Edzell's Keith Bruce tied for 11th place on 226 with scores of 76, 77 and 73.
Anglo-Scot Malcolm Reid (Sonning) finished joint 31st on 234 with scores of 75, 83 and 76.
