GREENOCK GC DOMINATES RENFREWSHIRE CHSHIPS

PRESS RELEASE

The Renfrewshire Golf Union Handicap Championships were contested at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club where, despite heavy rain on the previous day, the course was in excellent condition for the large field competing for the two handicap category trophies.
Despite this being an individual event, entrants from Greenock were very organised for the event with a team bus, individual competitors acting as coaches for others and, it is rumoured, one of them even taking the role of sports psychologist!  The careful planning obviously worked as both trophies will grace the trophy room at Greenock Golf Club until next year.
In the handicap 6 to 12 section, Whinhill’s Mark McCorkell set an early target with 81 less 10 for net 71.  This was bettered by Kenny Weir from Gleddoch who dropped two shots at the seventeenth but recovered to par the last for 81 and a net 70.  This stayed on the leader board until the final game with Jim McNeill from Greenock needing a par at eighteen to match it.  A birdie from Jim saved the count back.
In the 13 plus section, Old Ranfurly’s Sam McDonald finished with two pars for 89 and a net 72.  The same score was recorded by Chris Jones (Whinhill) who took the second place cheque on the better inward half.  Ian Wright from the all-conquering Greenock club stood on the 18th tee needing a par for 83 and a net 68.  With four shots in hand, his final hole six was good enough to ensure that both big cheques were available to celebrate the double victory.
