LEST WE FORGET: Aberdonian Bendelow who designed first US public course

JULY 1, 1895
Van Cortlandt Park, located in the Bronx in New York City, was opened this day 117 years ago.
The golf course, the first public course in the United States, was designed by Aberdeen-born Tom Bendelow.
The park is named for Stephanus Van Cortlandt, the first native-born mayor of New York, and the Van Cortlandt family, which was prominent in the area during the Dutch and English colonial periods. The park is today operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
