DONALDSON'S NARROW LEAD AS HE BIDS FOR EUROPEAN TOUR MAIDEN TITLE

FROM EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Jamie Donaldson will take a slender lead into the final day of the Irish Open, where the Welshman is bidding to capture his debut European Tour title on his 254th appearance.
After a controlled round of 69 at a wet and windy Royal Portrush Golf Club, where more than 30,000 spectators poured through the gates for the first time at a regular European Tour event, Donaldson leads by one stroke from England’s Anthony Wall, who in turn is a shot ahead of his compatriot Mark Foster and three-time Major Champion Padraig Harrington.
Home hopes rest squarely on the broad shoulders of Harrington, after his fellow Irishmen Rory McIlroy (-6), Michael Hoey (-5), Graeme McDowell (-4) and Darren Clarke (-3) struggled to make any headway in the persistent morning rain.
Once the sun came out in the afternoon, however, Donaldson and, particularly, Wall made the most of the benign conditions to post respective rounds of 69 and 67.
That moved Donaldson to 12 under par and Wall – who is sharing a caravan this week with his friend and compatriot Andrew Marshall – on 11 under.
The two will play in the final group of the day at 1.15pm, but the bulk of the galleries will be following Foster and Harrington, in the hope that the Dubliner can repeat his 2007 Irish Open victory.
