ERSKINE GOLF CLUB JUNIOR OPEN

The seventh Annual Junior Open was held on Friday 29^th June at Erskine Golf Club on a day when swimwear was more the order of the day. This however did not deter the 85 participants who took part, including a contingent of 11 players who travelled north for the day from Dumfries and Galloway Junior Section. The course itself stood up to the very wet conditions and remained playable despite the heavy rain. This is due in no small measure to the great work carried out by the green keeping staff over the past few years, and again the course was presented in superb condition for the competition.

The competition was once again sponsored by local family run, Paisley based STRATHAND SECURITY, and their sponsorship was invaluable giving the organisers the opportunity to increase the Prize Fund for the various categories and to provide numerous novelty prizes. .

The Scratch Trophy was a close fought affair with no less than 4 players scoring 73 Gross, Calum Aiken – Kilmacolm, Ross Robertson – Old Course Ranfurly, Colin Edgar – Cochrane Castle and Martin McCorkell – Gleddoch with Calum winning on countback with the better inward half.

The Strathand Trophy, awarded to the player with the best net score saw 2 players, Jonathan Brown and Andrew MacAlpine both from Erskine tied on net 64, but with Jonathan winning on countback with the better inward 9 holes. Both will now see their handicaps reduced as a result of the good scores.

Apart from Jonathan, all the boys mentioned are in the Renfrewshire Golf Union coaching squad giving a sure indication that this is working.

The Girls Trophy generously provided as a result of the STRATHAND SECURITY sponsorship was won by Samantha Cowan – Cochrane Castle. The girls playing in the competition were in the last games out and suffered the worst of the weather, so well done to them for completing their rounds.

This is a Renfrewshire Junior Order of Merit Competition and Ross Robertson – Old Course Ranfurly currently leads both the Under 18 and Under 15 Competitions, with Colin Edgar – Cochrane Castle lying second in the Under 18’s and Kyle Turner – Cochrane Castle second in the Under15’s.
