Renfrewshire boys defeat Glasgow

Renfrewshire boys golf team beat the team from Glasgow Golf Union at Haggs Castle Golf Club on Sunday, June 23 by 5 matches to 3.
This continues the good start they had to this season when they defeated Dunbartonshire 8 - 0 in May at Ranfurly Castle G.C.
The course was in good condition, but comments from all of the boys said that the greens were slow and inconsistent at times, but this was a reflection on the variable early season weather
The Renfrewshire team showed a number of changes from the previous match, with some players unavailable while others were available.
Drew Cleaver set the team off to a good start when in a very tight game he eventually won on the last hole against a very stubborn opponent, maintaining his 100% record.
Ewan Urquhart was always behind and 3 down with 4 to play won the next 3 holes only to run out of steam and went down by 2 holes.
Mac Holmes, never down until the 16th lost 2/1thanks to great golf by his opponent over the next 2 holes.
John Jack was a comfortably winner against an opponent not at this level, but a prospect for the future.
Harry Kellock always seemed to be in charge of his game, but every time won a hole, he lost the next but eventually closed out the game at the 17th.
Johnny Greig got of to a poor start but came good, then found himself 3 down with 3 to play and despite a valiant effort on 18 failed to repeat his great escape on the previous game and lost at the last.
In the final 2 games, Cameron Percy and Roddy McAuley who last week contested the final of the RGU Boys Match Play Championship were always in control of their matches despite a slight wobble by Cameron over the closing holes, but both ran out winners in the end

The match, as always, was again played in a very sporting manner

Murcar Links teams dominate

Murcar Links teams dominated the Watt Duffus Trophy women's competition at Inverurie Golf Club today.
The Murcar Links 1 team of Sammy Leslie, Rachel Polson, Carol Wilson and Donna Pocock won the scratch team trophy with a score of 223. The Murcar Links 2 team of Karen Mackay, Melanie Clarke, Olive Robb and Emma Gissing (missing from the team picture) won the handicap team trophy with a score of 221, beating McDonald Ellon by virtue of better inward halves.
Julie Henderson of Inverurie won the individual scratch trophy with a 71 and Karen Mackay won the handicap trophy with  a net 67 off 11.
Dot Mackinnon (McDonald Ellon) also had a net 67 but Karen Mackay had the better inward half.

GILLIAN KYLE WINS RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP AT PAISLEY

Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) won the 2019 Renfrewshire County Championship at Paisley Golf Club 

 Gillian who had been the losing finalist against Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) in 2018 and had previously been champion in 2015 against Donna Jackson  -- played well all week.

The final was a close affair with Gillian winning the second hole and Alyson McGinnigle (Cowglen) cancelling out her advantage on the third hole. 

Holes 4 to 7 were halved with Gillian winning holes 8 and 9 to go 
2 up on the turn. 

The first six holes of the second nine went to and fro with Gillian closing out the match at the 16th and winning by a 3 and 2 margin.

 In the handicap trophy, last year's losing finalist Morag Little (Whitecraigs) played great golf all week and was able to pick up the trophy by winning today against RLCGA Vice Captain Sandra Littlejohn (Erskine)

 Beth Paterson (Eastwood) was the winner of the Peggy Clark Trophy for the best net score in the qualifying round on Wednesday

Roddy McAuley wins the Caven Trophy

East Renfrewshire Golf Club was the setting for the playing of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys Stroke Play Championship for 2019.

The Caven Trophy was sponsored once again by Paisley-based, family- run company STRATHAND FIRE AND SECURITY   www.strathand.com and we thank them for their continued support of the event.

While the weather stayed dry for RGU Competition there was a cold and biting wind to contend with. The course as always was a test for those taking part, and with the recent spell of dry weather the course was playing well with little run available, however the greens were in superb condition. This was reflected in the majority of the scoring on the day.

This event is now played over 18 holes due to various issues, and the handicap limit was also increased to allow the younger Renfrewshire Boys to experience Competition at a higher level and this produced worthy winners in both events, as it was also decided to present a Net Score prize in addition to the main Scratch competition event..

In the boys' Caven Trophy tournament, Roddy McAuley of Fereneze Golf Club was the winner of the Renfrewshire Golf Union boys' stroke-play Championship with a Gross score of 73 having played steadily throughout his round. Roddy was the lowest handicap entrant in the field but the pressure of this did not affect his play, and he played with his usual happy characteristic.

Runner up was Rhys McIlroy of Elderslie Golf Club on 75 who has been impressive at coaching with Cameron Percy – Caldwell third also on 75 losing out to a better back nine, mainly due to the bogeys compiled on the last 4 holes.

The lowest net score was won by Gregor Rawson – Ranfurly Castle with a net score of 68 playing of a handicap of 16.

The 8 available qualifiers in the event go forward to the RGU Match Play Championship for the Boys for the Freedman Trophy being played as always over Kilmacolm Golf Club. The title is currently held by Cameron Percy who will no doubt be keen to repeat his wins over the last 2 seasons.

Fiona Campbell leads qualifiers for Shire women's match-play at wintry Murcar Links

It was a very cold, blustery evening, providing very testing conditions for the qualifying round of the Aberdeenshire women's county championship at Murcar Links.
Congratulations to leading qualifier Fiona Campbell (McDonald Ellon), pictured, with a excellent round of 77. She went out in 40 (+3) and back in 37 (+2). The par is 72, SSS 74 but the CSS was 77 reduction only.
The top 16 scratch players and the next eight handicap players play match-play tomorrow (Saturday), starting at 9.30.

historic first forges new
links for Forfar golf club


 Forfar Golf Club has confirmed it has engaged the services one of Scotland’s premier sport and leisure marketing agencies. As the fourth oldest 18-hole golf course in the world, this is the first time the club has brought in an agency to handle its promotional strategy marking a step-change in its 148-year history.

The agreement between Forfar Golf Club and The Word Association marks the start of initial preparatory stages for the club’s 150th anniversary in 2021 which will coincide with the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews. Covering communication, marketing and branding, the tie-up heralds a new era for one of the world’s oldest golf courses.

“Much of the attraction of Forfar is tied to its history and the championship course designed by Old Tom Morris, but the club also has important years ahead of it,” explained Forfar Golf Club’s managing secretary Stuart Wilson. “Bringing in The Word Association to help us tell our story is a game-changer. It represents a new approach for the club and an important step in reaffirming Forfar’s formative role in the development of golf.”

Wilson, who won the Amateur Championship at St Andrews as well as the coveted Silver Medal at The Open in 2004, played in The Masters in 2005 – the last time Tiger Woods triumphed at Augusta before his extraordinary 2019 win. 

Following his visit to Georgia, Wilson took the reins at Forfar Golf Club and has been there for 14 years. He says the new arrangement has already brought renewed focus and energy to the club.

“I’ve known Mark for a number of years,” he explained. “Last year we worked together on a separate project in the run-up to The Open at Carnoustie. We got chatting and it became apparent The Word Association could help us communicate Forfar’s incredible story to a broader audience. 

 "We’ve already discussed some exciting ideas and are working together on a new strategy. We’re looking forward to what happens next and collaborating during the build-up to our 150th centenary. It should be fun.”

The unique heathland course, known for its unusual ‘rig-and-furrow’ topography and undulating fairways, was initially laid out by Old Tom Morris. Thirteen of his greens remain in their original positions today. The fact it was re-designed by five-times Open Champion James Braid in 1926 only adds to the aura around the club, says Mark Alexander, founder of The Word Association.

“Forfar Golf Club is special, not only because of the fantastic heathland course and the amazing environment surrounding it, but also because of the significance of the place in terms of the history of golf,” he noted.

  “We’ve already started working with Stuart and the team to present the club with consistency and integrity, but our job is also to create a buzz about the club so golfers from around the UK and further afield want to experience one of golf’s most important layouts.”

One of the leading marketing consultancies in the golf industry, The Word Association was formed by husband-and-wife team Mark and Yvonne Alexander who work with private clubs, golf resorts and tourism businesses as well as hotels and industry trade bodies. According to Alexander, the tie-up with Forfar Golf Club was a natural fit.

“As well as helping to develop its marketing collateral, branding and communication, the attraction of working with a club like Forfar is the fantastic stories waiting to be told,” he said. “Forfar played an important role in the development of golf. Its connection with Old Tom Morris, for example, is a key aspect we will be communicating. This is an exciting project that will help reaffirm Forfar’s position as a linchpin in the growth of the game. Watch this space!”

Graham Bolton wins Argyll and Bute title for 

 record ninth time by beating Craig Pirie

Graham Bolton of Bute Golf Club won the Argyll and Bute match-play title for a record ninth time on Sunday with a 2 and 1 victory over Millport's Craig Pirie in the 18-hole final at windswept Machrihanish Dunes.
In a seesaw battle Bolton got off to a flyer to go three up after five holes. He increased his lead to four going to the ninth tee -- but Pirie battled back strongly to reduce the deficit to one with three holes remaining. 
Bolton responded to edge further ahead with a  birdie at the par-five 16th and went on to take the title with par at the next hole.
Strong south-easterly winds, which made playing conditionas difficult, greeted the 16 competitors who gathered at the Dunes for the opening rounds of the championship on Saturday morning 
Bolton earned his place in the final with victories over Mark Donaldson (Millport), John Jack (Millport), and George Reynolds (Rothesay). Craig Pirie's route to the final was via wins over Jack Reynolds (Rothesay), Les Pirie (Millport), and Michael Murty (Rothesay).
Bolton was not the only winner over the weekend as the Dunes course provided a great match-play venue with its undulating greens creating many challenges for the players.
A spokesman for Argyll and Bute Golf Union said: "We thank Machrihanish Dunes for hosting the event and, in particular, head greenkeeper Simon Freeman and assistant Malcolm Mitchell for preparing a course in first-class condition

RETIREMENT PRESENTATION TO
CLACKMANNAN 
COUNTY
SECRETARY

 Clackmannan County Golf Union held their annual dinner and presentation of prizes in Tillicoultry Golf Club last night.

A good night of food and speeches was enjoyed by all and a special presentation made to Tommy Johnson on his retirement as the longest serving Secretary of the Union.
  Tommy has many good memories to enjoy      
 "Seeing the success of County Teams and golfers was especially satisfying.....Clackmannan came very close to winning the Area Team Championship on two occasions.''

  The presentation was made by former County Secretary Hugh Hunter (on left) ... between them they have recorded 50 years of secretarial service to the Golf Union

Fife win Fife/Lothians Winter League for second year in a row

Congratulations go to Fife GA on winning the Fife/Lothians Winter League for a second year in a row by beating West Lothian 3.5-1.5 at Crail GS on Sunday.

DUNCAN SCOTT WINS AYRSHIRE

Duncan Scott (Royal Troon), pictured above
from the Ayrshire Golf website, won the Ayrshire Winter Golf Association competition at West Kilbride GC today for the Alan Meikle Trophy.
A nine-handicapper, he headed a field of 45 competitors by one stroke with a net 66.
Gordon Clark (Loudon Gowf) and Colin Peddie (Kirkintilloch) were joint runners-up on the 67 mark.
Three players tied for first place in the professional competition. Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck), a recent winner in Egypt,
Paul O'Hara (North Lanarkshire Leisure) and
Mike Patterson (Kilmacolm) all returned 65s.
