Walker Cup captain George Marucci
wins U S senior amateur title

United States Walker Cup team captain George (Buddy) Marucci junior from Villanova, Pennsylvania has won the US senior men's amateur championship. The 56-year-old finished two up on George Zahringer of New York City in the 18-hole final at Shady Oaks Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas.
Captain of the winning US team in the 2007 Walker Cup match at Royal County Down, Marucci will also skipper the American squad in the 2009 match, which presents a dilemma for the former auto dealer (he sold his business in 2007).
The 2009 Walker Cup and 2009 USGA Senior Amateur are scheduled at the same time, both starting on September 12. Thus Marucci will not defend his Senior Amateur title.“I’m not really upset,” Marucci said. “The Walker Cup is the most meaningful thing I’ve ever done in golf, so I’ll be back in 2010 in play in this one (Senior Amateur).
Marucci lost to Tiger Woods in the US men's amateur final of 1995.
