Local favourites go out in Carnegie
Shield at Royal Dornoch

Local hopes of regaining the Carnegie Shield took a big dent in yesterday's first round at Royal Dornoch when out went their club champion, Chris Mailley and holder of scratch handicap, Kevin Matheson.
Matheson surrendered his place in today's second round to the holder, Peter Latimer (The New Club) who squeezed through on the final green while club champion Mailley, one up with two to play, against Elgin based member, Philip Gauld, pulled the destruct button on the 17th tee firing into the bushes and went even wider with a provisional ball. From the 18th tee Mailley then went left into trouble to also lose this hole and the game.
Seventy year old George Owens from Virginia Beach, Richmond USA cruised through to the second round after just fourteen holes but as second qualifier would not have expected to play the Holder, Latimer, as early as this morning's second round.
Local member and 32nd qualifier Kristain Sinclair eagled the ninth hole to get back to level in his first round tie against leading qualifier Jorg Paulis but over the next seven holes the Danish scratch golfer who plays his golf in Nuremberg re-established his pole position and won on the 17th green.
