Sam Torrance will scale the heights at
Slaley Hall for a good cause

Ryder Cup winning captain Sam Torrance is set to scale the heights in a special rooftop charity challenge at Slaley Hall to mark the return of world-class tournament golf to the North East of England.
The Northumbrian resort is hosting the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship (August 21-24) and the Scot plus fellow Ryder Cup hero Costantino Rocca, defending champion Carl Mason and Gordon Brand Junior will be taking part in a nearest the pin contest off a specially constructed tee on the roof terrace.
This unique stunt, which is taking place on Tuesday, August 19, is being sponsored by Pure Impact Golf Mats and Northern Bear, and will see the foursome endeavour to pepper the flag on the 18th green of the Hunting Course from their lofty perch just under 100 yards away.
There will be added significance for Brand who is celebrating his birthday on Tuesday and will be striking his first shot as a Senior.
Up for grabs in the rooftop shootout is a cheque for £1,500 with £500 going to the Golf Foundation and £1,000 to a charity of the winner’s choice.
“Slaley Hall is a spectacular building and what better way to showcase this magnificent venue and the great players we have in the field this week,” said PGA director of golf, Stephen Cox.
“Sam, Carl, Gordon and Costantino are fantastic ambassadors for the Seniors Tour and we are delighted that they have chosen to play in the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship and also to help us promote the event. It should be a lot of fun and all in a good cause.”
The De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship is one of the most prestigious on the European Seniors Tour calendar and this year boasts a record prize fund of £300,000.
Torrance, Rocca, Brand and Mason will be joined by a strong field that includes former Masters champion Ian Woosnam and a host of other stars of the Seniors circuit including Jose Rivero and Eamonn Darcy.
The Championship will be played on the Dave Thomas designed Hunting Course, set amid rolling moorland, streams and lakes, towering trees and banks of rhododendrons.
“The real business begins on Thursday August 21st and we would encourage golf enthusiasts in the area to come along and see some top quality tournament golf at first hand. The golf course is in superb condition so I am sure it will be a fantastic spectacle,” added Cox.
Tickets for the De Vere Collection PGA Seniors Championship can be purchased by calling 01675 477812 or bought on the gate.
