Fairhaven's Charles Durnian ended the campaign of England international Max Smith
when he sank a 25ft birdie putt at the 20th hole to win their fourth round match in the Boys Amateur Championship at Little Aston in Birmingham.
The fact that the game had gone so far was a testament to Smith’s fighting qualities, as the 16-year-old Millfield School pupil from Newbury had accidentally broken his putter as he walked off the eighth green, so played 12 holes putting with a wedge.
“He frustratingly kicked it when he missed a two foot putt after Charles had sank one from about 20ft and the head flew off,” said Max’s dad Peter.
“It was tough for Max when he broke his putter,” said Durnian, who is coached by his dad Denis, a former European Tour player who now plays on the Seniors Tour, and who holds the record for the lowest nine holes ever shot at The Open (28 on the front nine at Royal Birkdale in 1983).
“I got two up at one stage, but Max pulled back to all square, despite not having a putter. Every time he missed the green he chipped it close and I had to give it him.
“I played very well, although I struggled on the last few, but then I played well on the play-off holes,” said Durnian.
Taught the game by his dad from the age of three, Durnian is now also influenced by South African coach Gavan Levenson.“I spend about five months of the year with my mum out in South Africa where I’m coached by Gavan at his academy in Johannesburg. I went first in 2006 after I finished my GCSEs.
“It was either stay here and do my A-levels or go to South Africa and I chose South Africa. The weather’s perfect every day, it’s just a great place to play golf.”
Garth MeGee from Malone beat Marcus Lester from Portugal at the 19th and Michael Durcan from Co Sligo had a 3&1 victory over England’s Jake Shepherd, who had put out defending champion Emilio Cuartero in the third round.o of Ireland’s victorious Home Internationals team got through to the last 16. Garth McGee
“I played good steady match-play golf,” said Durcan. “I was three up after five and although Jake pulled one back, that was as close as he got and I finished him off with a birdie on the 17th.”
France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Portugal and Italy are all represented in the last 16 alongside five players from England and two each from Ireland and Scotland.
Italian Cristiano Terragni, a beaten semi-finalist at Royal Porthcawl last year, had a 2&1 victory over Karlis Broders, the first Latvian ever to play in the championship, while Portugal’s Pedro Figueiredo, a quarter-finalists at the Amateur Campionship at Turnberry in June, had a 3&2 win over Scott Campbell from Hallowes in Derbyshire.
David Law from Aberdeen club Hazlehead had to go all the way to the 18th against Shirley Park’s Jamie Carney before winning by one hole. He was two up with two to play, Carney birdied the 17th to keep the match alive, but then couldn’t squeeze a birdie out the last, which they halved in par.
