Kevin Chappell and UCLA
claim NCAA honours

James Byrne had an early finish to his NCAA championship campaign after he and other members of the Arizona State University Golf team failed to qualify for the final day's play at the NCAA Division 1 college golf championship over the 7,450yd. Kampen course at Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, Indiana.
With only the players from the top 15 teams of a starting field of 30 going through to the final day’s play, the Sun Devils, after battling strong winds, scored a total of 52 over par and were left disappointed, missing out on 15th place by three strokes and tying for 17th place with Illinois.
The all-British/Irish team of players at East Tennessee State University also failed to advance, their total of 59 over par left them tied for 22nd place.
UCLA, led by the individual winner, Kevin Chappell, captured their second national golf title – and first since 1988. UCLA closed with an 18-over 306 for a 42-over 1,194 total and hung on for a one-shot victory over defending champion Stanford, which closed with a final-round best 302.
The University of Southern California team, which battled its city rivals from start to finish, was another shot back at 1,196 after a 305.
Chappell won the coveted title with rounds of 69, 73, 68 and 76 for 286. He had three shots to spare from Spaniard Jorge Campillo (Indiana) and Nick Taylor (Washington).

+Editor Colin Farquharson would like to express his thanks to Paul Byrne, father of James, for the above report which explains the ins-and-outs of the NCAA Division 1 championship far better than Colin could.

+If you are wondering what the initials UCLA stand for - University of California Los Angeles.
