CURTIS CUP SATURDAY
LUNCHTIME QUOTES

MARY McKENNA
(Speaking after having just watched Liz Bennett hole a putt on the 18th green for GB&I to share the morning foursomes 1 ½-1 1/2).

That was absolutely crucial. It really was. It was brilliant of Liz and fair “do’s” to her. She was under a lot of pressure having knocked it out of town (out of bounds from the 17th tee).
I keeping say to the girls: Wins are important but halves are equally as important. They all add up.
This could be the turning point for us … get us going … we haven’t lost any ground which is brilliant and we still have three points to play for in the afternoon.
So we could be on a level pegging yet …
Yes, the 17th was a blow for us but when you look back on 15 and 16 in that match (Bennett & Ewart v Amanda Blumenherst & Tiffany Joh), the Americans missed a short one at the 15th and three-putted the 16th so you could say for them (the Americans) that they had let it slip and ours jumped in and took it.
So if there is such a thing as a fair result in golf, that was it.
It means an awful lot to us and the girls will be buzzing now.
Jodi’s putt downhill wasn’t easy. If she had hit it too hard it could have slid way past the hole.
I said very little to the girls last night. I told them we had to focus on each session as it comes, starting with three points in the foursomes.
They are all playing well and I told them to be patient.
Breanne and Carly were kind of slow (one down) before the turn and I said to them “Come on you’ve got 10 chances of birdies left … so they birdied the short eighth, parred nine, birdied the 10th and suddenly they’ve gone from one down to one up. They got the momentum going so I’ve decided to leave the two of them together for the afternoon.
I’m just awfully sorry that I’m not playing Jodi in the afternoon, that I’m going with the others. But they are all playing well.
