Murcar Links wins Senior Northern
Counties Cup for first time

By ROBIN WILSON
Former Walker Cup player Hugh Stuart, vice captain and honorary member of Murcar Links Golf Club, led team-mates Clark Alexander, Eric Morrison and Willie Fyfe to gold medal success in the final of the B. D. Fraser Senior Northern Counties Cup at Duff House Royal Golf Club, Banff,.
They beat the second team of Cruden Bay in the final by four holes.
In the competition's unique format of foursomes golf where both pairings play to the final hole and the combined score decides, Stuart, who next year will be given the honour of captaining the Murcar Links Club in their Centenary Year was the inspirational partner of Alexander.
Stuart, still with his trademark of pin-point accuracy to the greens, left his partner with lots of chances with his putter and Alexander made two vital putts on the 17th and 18th greens to beat Cruden Bay stalwarts, brothers Bill and Hugh Livingston by four holes.
Cruden Bay's second string of Mike Keddie and Ronnie Middleton fought to the end and were still in the game against Eric Morrison and Willie Fyfe after 17 holes but when news filtered back that their first string lost the 18th hole, and the cup to an Alexander birdie they agreed on a square game with the Murcar Links duo.
The senior verson of this competition which began in 2002 at Duff House Royal now moves for its eighth year to Inverness Golf Club in 2009 with no club yet equalling Brora Golf Club's two win in 2003 and 2006.
The main verson of the competition incorporating all clubs stretching from Stonehaven to the Orkney Islands takes place September 18-20 at Tain Golf Club where Nairn are the defending club.
