End of June deadline for
Matchplay pairs entries

GOLFERS from across the UK & Ireland have until the end of June to sign up for the Matchplay Championship, one of Europe’s biggest amateur pairs competitions.

First round matches get underway in July, after which pairs have a chance to play in a regional qualifier on a prestigious course and ultimately the grand final at a beautiful luxury beach resort in Egypt.

James Lightfoot, 19, who plays at Upton-by-Chester GC and winner of last year’s competition with partner Michael Brockbank, said: “We both had the time of our lives; the hotel, food, course and location were just perfect. I would urge any club golfer out there to enter the competition. It’s a great way to play friendly but competitive golf and for an entry fee of £20”

The grand final takes place over three days between 9-16 May 2009 at the Taba Heights Resort. Finalists will have the chance to take trips from the hotel to the Pyramids or Petra in Jordan, or relax in the adjacent Red Sea where a host of water sports are available.

Around 2000 golfers are expected to enter the Matchplay Championship this year in a bid to enjoy the week-long all expenses paid trip to Egypt.

John Woosey, managing director of The Golfer’s Club which promotes the Matchplay Championship, said: “We are looking forward to the 2008/09 event being our biggest ever.
“The Matchplay Championship not only offers players a tremendously exciting and competitive tournament of golf but, for just £20, the chance to play in one of the most stunning golfing locations on the planet.

“With such fantastic competitive golf, the chance to play different courses and a stunning prize on offer, there really is no reason not to enter.”

The Matchplay Championship is supported by american golf, Today’s Golfer and rewards4golf.com.
