JONNY CALDWELL WINS SUN BELT
CONFERENCE TITLE IN RECORD STYLE

Walker Cup player Jonny Caldwell from Belfast, in his last few weeks as a senior student at South Alabama University, won the Men's Sun Belt Conference golf title at The Shoals Golf Club, Muscle Shoals in Alabama.
Caldwell strung together three great rounds of 69, 67 and 69 for an 11-under-par total of 205 - a tournament record held for the past 11 years by now US Tour player Heath Slocum.
The course was no pitch-and-putt circuit, meassuring 7,094yd with a testing par of 72.
Caldwell follows in the footsteps of Gareth Maybin, another student from the Emerald Isle who won the same title in 2004.
Caldwell's South Alabama team-mate Jack Hiluta, an England boy international from Chelmsford, finished 9th in a field of 60 on 211 with scores of 74, 67 and 70.
Despite Caldwell and Hiluta's efforts, South Alabama could finish no higher than third of 12 in the team event, won by Denver (853) by a shot from New Orleans with South Alabama on the 856 mark.
“Obviously, I am very happy with the way the guys fought all week,” said South Alabama University head golf coach Ben Hannan said. “I am very happy for Jonny to leave here as the SBC champion and to break the record too is something very special.”
