URQUHART GAINS PASS MARKS AT
SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR Q SCHOOL

Northern Open champion Murray Urquhart assured himself of as many starts on the 2008 South African Tour as he wants after claiming the No. 12 card of 42 players with totals of 290 and better at the Sunshine Tour's Qualifying School today (Friday).
Urquhart, 34, from Inverness, settled any doubts with one of his best rounds of 2007 - a three-under-par 69 over the tricky Country Club of Johannesburg Woodlands course for a total of four-under-par 284. His earlier scores had been 72, 72 and 71 so he never went over par in any of his scores over two qualifying courses, both in excess of 7,000 yards.
Urquhart, who campaigned on the Tartan Tour and Challenge Tour this year, reached the turn in one-over-par 37 with bogeys at the third and sixth cancelling out an early birdie at the second. But his inward half was a thing of bogey-free beauty. He birdied the 13th, 14th, 16th and 18th to come sailing home in four-under-par 32.
The 2008 South African PGA Tour starts with the Joburg Open from January 10 to 13 and Urquhart plans to play the best part of the first three months of the New Year in South Africa.
Urquhart was the only Scot in the Tour School field. Only two British players finished ahead of him - Jeremy Kavanagh from Maple Cross, Hertfordshire and another Englishman, Andy Turner.
Kavanagh scored 68, 68, 67 and 70 to share second place on 273 with 23-year-old Springbok amateur Oliver Bekker. Turner finished joint fifth on 280.
South African, Martin Maritz from Pretoria headed the 42 card-earners with a total of 17-under-par 271, which included a course record 64 in the third round.
