NIDDRIE CASTLE PAIR WIN TROPHY IN
FOG OVER GULLANE No 3 COURSE
By DUNCAN IRELAND
Secretary, Edinburgh & East of Scotland Alliance.
An excellent turn-out of 50 couples over the Gullane No 3 course on a not particularly great day.
The scoring, considering you couldn't see more than 20 yards at times because of the fog, was exceptionally good although there were a few poor attempts, none worse than Duncan Stewart & his long suffering partner, Alex Jamieson. Duncan blamed Alex, Alex blamed Duncan but they still had a great time so perhaps we can get Duncan to put up a booby prize for next year!
Congratulations are due to this year's winners, John Wilson and his partner Mr W Watson from Niddrie Castle. Their 79 less 12.4 for a net 63.6 was better than their nearest rivals, Douglas Hume and J Laurieston by just more than a shot.
David Patrick and his partner Andrew Hogg from Mortonhall had a very respectable scratch score of three under par 65. Not only was this score good enough to win the scratch prize and also good enough to tie for second handicap, it was achieved while incurring four penalty shots for losing 2 balls. What a score it might have been!
As well as the main winners today, the Alliance saw it's first hole in one for many years. Brian Chrystal's partner, Derek McLachlan (Peebles) managed this noble feat with an 8 iron at the 15th hole. Not bad when you couldn't see that far. Congratulations to him and I guess he can consider himself picked as Brian's partner for next year too.
A final farewell to Bill Law. After about six years helping both myself and the previous secretary, Peter Halton, Bill has given up his role so that he can spend more time with his wife. Well that's not quite what he said but on behalf of all the Members I'd like to thank him for all his help over the years. If, in the future, you happen to see him in a golf club somewhere then please stop and buy him a drink and I'm sure he'll be very grateful.
I too am giving up the Secretary's position in the very near future and would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year and would also like to ask you to "look after" my successor as well as you've taken care of me.
