SUPER-MAC WINS NEWLANDS TROPHY AND THE
SCOTTISH GOLF UNION ORDER OF MERIT TITLE

Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay virtually wrapped up victory in the Newland Trophy 72-hole tournament and the Scottish Golf Union Order of Merit title with a brilliant third round of 63 at Lanark today (Sunday).
That seven-under-par score was one shot inside the record for the Blue Course, set by local member Chris Orr in last year’s Newlands Trophy.
It also put the 23-year-old Macaulay seven shots clear of the field and eight shots ahead of Wallace Booth (Comrie) his only serious challenger in the SGU Order Merit table prior to this, the last 72-hole counting event of the season.
Macaulay, who had made all the running, could afford to take his foot off the pedal in the final round – and he did, returning a four-over-par 74, after earlier rounds of 68, 70 and 63 for a five-under-par final total of 275.,
His memorable blemish-free third-round scorecard included an eagle 3 at the eighth and birdies at the second, fifth, 10th, 14th and 16th in halves of 32 (four under par) and 31 (three under par).
It was Macaulay’s third 72-hole win on the SGU domestic circuit. He won last year’s West of Scotland Open before completing his fourth and final year of a golf scholarship at the University of Mississippi.
Last weekend he won the South-east District Open at West Linton, beating Glenn Campbell (Blairgowrie) in a play-off for the title, a victory which propelled him to the top of the SGU Order of Merit points totals, ahead of Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw) who was not going to add to his final total because of Walker Cup duty.
It underlines Callum's progress as a competitor that he finished eighth in the Order of Merit last year and had still to gain a first full cap for Scotland. This he will achieve in the forthcoming home internationals at County Louth.
Macaulay is not among the Tartan Army heading south for the European Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 events over the next two weeks. He is going to play another year on the amateur circuit.
Scottish youths champion Scott Borrowman (Dollar) gave Clackmannan County a notable 1-2 at Lanark. Borrowman had scores of 69, 71, 68 and 71 for a total of 279, four shots behind the easing up Macaulay.
Craigielaw’s Mark Hillson slipped past the faltering Wallace Booth to fill third place on 280 with scores of 75, 67, 69 and 69.
Booth took fourth place on 282 with 70, 70, 69 and 73.
