IAN REDFORD KEEPS THE SCOTTISH UNDER-16s
TROPHY AT KING JAMES VI CLUB, PERTH

How many golf clubs could boast of providing the winner of the Douglas Gillespie Scottish Under-16 boys’ open stroke-play championship two years in a row – and a different boy each year?
Well, history repeated itself in a kind of way today at Brunston Castle Golf Club, south Ayrshire today when Ian Redford, a junior member at the Perth club whose course is in the middle of the River Tay – on Moncrieffe Island to be precise - followed in the footsteps of his clubmate Sam McLaren who won the Under-16s’ title at Deeside Golf Club, Aberdeen last year.
Ian , 14-year-old son of former Dundee and Rangers football star of the same name, had rounds of 71, 76 and 75 for a six-over-par total of 222 to win by two shots from three players: French challenger Sebastien Riou who, after starting with an 82, had the lowest aggregate for the second and third rounds, two 71s, Billy Downing (Truro), the English lad who won the Scottish Under-14 championship in 2005, and overnight leader David Law from Aberdeen’s Hazlehead club.
Downing finished with a 77 and 78.
After nine holes of the third round, Law still retained the lead but he was sharing it at three over par with Redford and Downing.
Then a double-bogey at the 11th followed by bogeys at the 14th, 17th and 18th, knocked back Law to an inward 41 and out of the lead.
Downing came home in 41 shots, bogeying the 11th, 12th and 15th and double-bogeying the 16th.
Riou never got to better than seven over par for the tournament after birdieing the second and sixth in an outward 34. A double bogey 6 at the 11th and a bogey at the 12th was the turning point for the French teenager. He did birdie the 13th and 17th but by that time Ian Redford had gone clear.
Having bogeyed the first and second, Ian birdied the fifth, ninth and 13th , at which point he was two over par for the tournament and in the pole position by several shots, so much so that he could afford to bogey the 14th, double bogey the 16th and drop another shot at the 17th for 39 home and still win by two strokes.
Ian Redford, who had three of a handicap, lives at Newburgh-on-Tay and is a pupil at St Leonard's School, St Andrews.
