MONTY NOT READY TO THROW IN THE
TOWEL YET: THREE-UNDER-PAR 68
IN FRENCH OPEN FIRST ROUND
Colin Montgomerie is not ready yet to accept being written off - not even after four missed cuts in a row in the majors and an 82 at the US Open two weeks ago.
In his first tournament round since that Oakmont horror show, Montgomerie began the French Open on Thursday with a three-under-par 68 and then took aim at his critics.
Asked if he would like to silence people, presumably those who doubt he will ever challenge for a major again now he has turned 44, the Scot said:
"Yes, there is an element to that. There is one thing to shut everybody up and that's to win. That's the aim - of course it is."
He added: "When I changed [clubs] from Wilson to Callaway after winning the Order of Merit twice people were talking about 'What's that all about?'. The first two rounds in Dubai were 68-63 and that shut everybody up."
Montgomerie went on to six more European Tour money list titles and he has also had five second-place finishes in majors - more than anybody in history without capturing one.
He has not won any tournament now since the Hong Kong Open in December 2005, the second longest barren spell of his entire career, and has fallen from 17th to 48th in the world this year.
"There's nothing better for confidence than a win and I've got to get back there. If I can win before the Open (at Carnoustie in three weeks) that would be fantastic."
Surprisingly high scores by two Scots in the first round in Paris were an 80 by Alastair Forsyth and an 81 by Marc Warren.
