CELTIC PRO TOUR PRESS RELEASE
GRIFFITHS WINS CARMARTHEN BAY
OPEN BY EIGHT STROKES
Whitchurch’s Matthew Griffiths led from start to finish to win the Carmarthen Bay Open golf tournament at Machynys Peninsula.
In blustery conditions and with very soft ground underfoot, Griffiths shot a remarkable four-under-par par 68 on day one, the only player under par in the field.
He stretched his lead on day two by shooting another under par round of 71, to finish on five under 139.
This was the fourth event of the Dragon Tour, Wales’ first professional golf tour, and now part of the Celtic Pro Tour.
Griffiths’ nearest challengers, Ian Brown (Newent) and amateur Richard Hooper (Neath) were eight shots back at +3.
Hooper is in a rich vein of form, having won the first event of the Celtic Pro season at Pyle and Kenfig earlier this month in a play-off against former European Tour player Stuart Manley (Mountain Ash). He also recently won the prestigious amateur event at Gower Golf club, the Gower Gauntlet.
Griffiths said: “I’m delighted to win on the Celtic Pro Tour. I played last year too under the Dragon Tour brand and have been very impressed with the way the tour is run and set up, and hope it continues to grow.
“I’m feeling very confident with my game at the moment and have had a successful start to the season. I’ve already won twice on the South Wales Alliance circuit and have had a number of top three finishes on the PGA West Region events. I hope to continue the good form over the summer as I strive forward towards my ultimate goal of gaining a European Tour card through the qualifying school process in September.”
Griffiths picks up the first prize cheque for £1,000 and 100 Order of Merit points, a Powerbug Trolley and a Sunderland of Scotland waterproof suit.
Brown collected £500 in second place with Hooper winning the voucher for the leading amateur. In third place in the professional event was David Price (Aber Wrought Iron / www.vale-hotel.com) on +4, who wins £250, and four players were tied for fourth place – Alun Evans (Newport Links), Lewis James (Southerndown), Mark Govier (Morriston) and Tom Davies (Machynys), each winning £100.
"Fresh" from his third place finish in the Wexford Open in Ireland last week, Davies shot a first round nine over par 81 to lie in joint 19th place overnight on his home course.
Day two was a different story for the golfer from Maesteg, with a one under par 71, moving him into the money winning places, and catapulting the only ever-present player on the Tour since its inception in 2006 straight to the top of the Order of Merit.
Davies overtakes 2006 Order of Merit Winner, Alex Smith (Pyle and Kenfig), who did not play at Machynys due to a clashing Europro Tour event.
The next Celtic Pro Tour event, the Carmarthenshire Open takes place at Garnant Park, on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th July.
