CLOBER PIP SAXONE AND DEACONSBANK
IN BELHAVEN BEST QUALIFIER

Clober Golf Club captain Jim Graham, a former Scotland youth international, and club secretary Brian Davidson combined to great effect to take the honours in the second Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries regional final at Eastwood.
The duo fired an impressive five-under par 65 as the sun shone on the south side of Glasgow, to pip runners-up Saxone and third place Deaconsbank on an inward nine countback.
One handicapper Graham, who played alongside Gordon Brand Jnr and Brian Marchbank in the Scottish Youths team in the late 70s, is relishing the prospect of returning to Blairgowrie for the final in September.
“The last time I played there was a Youth match against Ronan Rafferty so I’ve got great memories of the Rosemount course. It was great fun playing with my secretary Brian – we dovetailed well and we’re delighted to win,” said Jim.
“It’s a real pleasure to play with Jim. He’s a great player and having just missed out on the Belhaven final last year (after a countback) I’m grateful for having such a strong partner.” added the Clober secretary.
The Saxone pairing of Gordon Bettany and Michael O’Brien recorded an excellent card of 65, which only included one 5, but were nudged into second spot by virtue of an inward half 33 to Clober’s 32. Deaconsbank Golf Club’s combination of Patrick Kane and 2-handicapper William McMillan stormed out in four-under par but weren’t quite able to keep on the birdie trail to finish in third place.
Sealing their place in the Belhaven Final were Ranfurly Castle and Loch Ness with matching 67s, the latter of which made the long journey south the night before, which proved more than fruitful.
The remaining final spots were taken by Clydeview & Cleddans, Sheddans Lethamhill, 19th Hole, Ayr Seafield and Kirkintilloch, all of whom shot 2-under par 68s. The unlucky 11th spot went to Renfrew, who missed out by way of a last hole card play-off.
The third regional final of the Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries Championship takes place on the July 17 at Lanark.
