REVENGE FOR SCOTS YOUTHS OVER IRISH

Scotland gained a measure of revenge for last year’s 5 1/2-3 1/2 defeat by Ireland at Blairgowrie when they won the annual youths international golf match 6-3 at West Waterford Golf Club today.
The Under-21 Scots put themselves in a very strong position when they won two and halved the other in the three morning foursomes.
The Irish came out fighting for the six singles and Seamus Power, playing over his home course, beat Newmachar’s Lewis Kirton 6 and 4 in the top singles. But Scott Borrowman, the new Scottish youths champion from Dollar, steadied the ship by winning the No 2 singles tie by 2 and 1 against Andrew Hogan. Borrowman was one down after nine but gradually gained the upperhand after birdieing the 12th.
Ireland did gain a second win in the singles when Niall Kearney won a tight one against Philip McLean (Peterhead) on the last green. McLean, who had an eagle at the 16th, played well and was unlucky not to salvage a halved match.
But Scotland’s tail wagged with Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh), who had been two down with five to play, halving his match against Neil O’Briain before Robert McKnight (Barassie) - four birdies on the inward half - beat Dara Lernihand 3 and 2 and Ross Kellett (Colville Park), with a bag of five birdies, was a 2 and 1 winner over Fergal Rafferty.
The Scots have stayed on at West Waterford Golf Club for the two-day Irish youths open stroke-play championship at the same venue, starting on Thursday.
