SCOTTISH GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
SCOTLAND NAME STRONG YOUTHS
TEAM TO PLAY IRELAND
Ross Kellett heads a six strong team representing Scotland competing in the Youths International Match against Ireland, which gets underway on Wednesday at West Waterford Golf Club.
The Colville Park player, buoyed by a recent momentous win under his belt - after dismounting Jamie Moul the former world number one from the British Amateur title race last week, before his own Amateur hopes were dashed after reaching a well earned place in the quarter final – is joined by the newly crowned Scottish Youths Stroke Play Champion, Scott Borrowman.
Kellett and his five fellow standard bearers will hope that good form and good fortune will favour them tomorrow over the par 72 parkland course set on the banks of the River Brickey, after Ireland imposed a crushing defeat on the Scots last year at Blairgowrie.
Dollar ace Borrowman, speaking just after his title win at the weekend at Erskine said, “I am feeling confident, the title will certainly bolster me heading into the youths match, and I am keen to get more wins under my belt.”
Former British Boys Champion Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh) and Philip McLean (Peterhead) join the ranks along with Lewis Kirton – a key figure in the silver medal winning team last year at the European Boys Championship – with Robert McKnight (Kilmarnock Barassie) completing the team.
STRONG INDIVIDUAL PERFORMERS
Commenting ahead of the one day event, comprising morning foursomes, followed by singles matches in the afternoon, SGU Performance Manager Stuart Turner said, “Scotland is fielding a strong team in this friendly match, undoubtedly keen to make amends for last year’s result. With such strong individual performers within the team, they will certainly provide a strong challenge to the Irish side.”
The team will remain in Ireland to compete in the Irish Youths Amateur Open Championship at the same venue on Thursday and Friday.
It is:
Scott Borrowman (Dollar)
Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh)
Ross Kellett (Colville Park)
Lewis Kirton (Newmacher)
Robert McKnight (Kilmarnock Barassie)
Philip McLean (Peterhead)
