British men's amateur championship at Royal Lytham

KELLETT AND MACAULAY IN
LAST EIGHT - AND THEY PLAY
EACH OTHER FOR PLACE
IN SEMI-FINALS

Ross Kellett from Colville Park Golf Club, Motherwell and Tulliallan's Callum Macaulay are the only two Scots to reach the last eight of the British men's amateur championship at Royal Lytham - and they will meet in Friday morning's quarter-finals.
Kellett, 19 years of age, reached the quarter-finals by beating Jamie Moul (Stoke by Nayland), ranked the No 2 amateur in the world after being No 1 for 13 weeks earlier in the year.
Ross beat him on the 18th green for his greatest ever victory ... so far.
Callum Macaulay, pictured above, recently graduated after four years at the University of Missippi, won through at the 20th in the early evening against Kenny Le Sager (France) tie.
Walker Cup man Lloyd Saltman (Craigielaw), the favourite, went down to little known Chris Wood from Long Ashton, Bristol, by one hole.
Wood was four under par for the last six holes of the match.
Wood, the fifth best qualifier for the match-play stages, now plays the American Dean Weaver who ousted Kevin McAlpine (Alyth), holder of the Scottish match-play and stroke-play amateur titles. Weaver won by 2 and 1.
Weaver is a 20-year-old second-year student at Virginia Tech University where that awful shooting of 30-odd students by a deranged colleague took place just a few months ago. Weaver was in the college library at the time - and stayed there for the best part of 4 hours before he felt it was safe to come out.
McAlpine's quality of play was high enough possibly to win any other tie on the course. He was four under par for the 17 holes played. Unfortunately for the Scot Weaver was SIX under par.
Weaver rushed into a three-hole lead after only six holes, including a chip-in eagle 3 from some 30 yards at the sixth among his red figures.
McAlpine was two down after 10 holes but squared an epic contest by birdieing the 11th and 12th. Weaver hit back with a birdie of his own to regain the lead at the 13th and then sank a crucial 12ft birdie putt to get back to two holes up at the 16th. A pitch-and-putt par - one of the few in the game - finished the contest in the American's favour at the next hole.
Another Scot to bow out was Mark Kerr from Craigielaw. Kerr, who works part-time in his father's public bar business to fund his amateur golf actitivies, lost by 3 and 1 to Australian Rick Kulacz.
